Every time I boot up I receive the following Error Message:

Explorer has caused an invalid page fault in module MSONSEXT.DLL @ 0187:379cc13a

Of course this freezes everything and I'm unable to use my laptop.

I've been trying to figure out what to do about this for almost a month now . . . Yesterday I started Safe Mode and decided to see what would happen IF I REnamed the file. I did so (calling it MSONSEXT.LLL) can tell you that now I'm able to use the laptop almost as well as before this problem manifested itself.

Just previously to the problem I'd installed an USB 2 hub PCMCIA (Manufacturer: Orange Micro). Checked with the manufacturer for a possible update that would indicate they had reports of this problem. NOPE!

I also installed an external Hard Drive (Manufacturer: acom Data). I also checked with them with the same result as with the USB 2 hub.

What to do? Any help would be most appreciated. Thank You! for your time and any assistance you offer.

Thanks! -- Bruce

msonsext.dll is described as the 'MS Office Name Space Extension' - doesn't sound like it's at all related to your hardware changes.

Have you tried restoring a fresh copy from the CAB files (win98_36.cab) to Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders with SFC? Or download from that link.

HI there!

I don't understand a few things regarding your reply. First, let me thank you for letting me know more succinctly what this file is. But, I don't understand how to do this restoration you suggest. "Have you tried restoring a fresh copy from the CAB files (win98_36.cab) to Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders with SFC?".

Nor do I understand what "link" you refer to, "Or download from that link.". Where? Can you give me an URL to go to for this download? I clicked on the underlined, green-colored word "link" and it took me to what appears to be a website selling something called LogMeIn because when I clicked on it I was redirected. They offered me the software for $12.95.

How can I secure the file I need for free AND how do I install it to replace the "corrupted" one?

Thanks! -- Bruce

Just enter SFC into the 'run' box on your start button and follow the instructions for extracting a file from your CD.

More on SFC here:

I'm somewhat concerned by what you've reported - that BLUE link should have taken you to:

http://www.dictacomm.com/Win_Dll/98_2nd/M_dll_Files.htm

which is not a pay site.

If the link you clicked on was green and double underlined, that might be (unfortunately) one of this site's advertising choices - Intellitxt. Thankfully, they don't show in my browser.
