Comment:
I am getting the error cannot load the dynamic link library and msnp32.dll cannot be found. I have copied it froom the win98 cd into the windows folder and the windows system folder, still cannot find it. It is involving a networking error as well but I do not have a network card in the system. I have completely cleared the communications folder and changed the windows primary logon but still giving me the error with the networking and missing the msnp32.dll.
Does anyone have any new suggestions?

Mayce,
How did you copy it to your windows/system folder? If you did not extract it to the folder you may want to do so to ensure that the msnp32.dll file is properly entered in the Registry.Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information.
On the Tools menu, click System File Checker.
Click "Extract one file from installation disk," type msnp32.dll then click Start.
In the Restore From box, type the path to the Win98 folder on the Windows 98 CD-ROM.
If your CD-Rom is D Drive then D:\win98
Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.Post back.
Good Day!

That is what I was using was the sfc (system file checker) program to extract the file from the Win98 cd. I extracted it to the C:/windows/system but upon rebooting it still cound not find the file. So then extracted it to the desktop and saw the folder there so I copied and pasted it to C:/windows and C:/windows/system and again upon rebooting still could not find the file. Hmmm :( /scratches head
I can get past it but really need to know how to fix this.

Mayce,
Have you tried removing the Client for Microsoft Network. Click on OK. It should give you the error your network is not complete do you wish to continue.
Select no then Add. Then Add the Client for Microsoft Network.
Read elsewhere this worked for someone after replacing the file using SFC.
Post back.Good Day!

Hi!
I have the same problem as the other people above, my msnp32.dll is missing, I tried to do everything but it doesn't work. I copied it to system, but it still doesn't work :(
How should I remove this client for Microsoft Network? And what do I have to do then? Help me please!

Thanks to all of you, I have been able to boot up normally again. Two days ago, I had cable service hooked to my unit, rather than a regular ISP. Following installation, I tried a normal shut down and re-start. That's when trouble started. I kept getting a message saying I was missing msnp32.dll! I typed msnp32.dll into a google search. That brought me to your forum. I followed all your tips, and I'm back to normal. Many thanks

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'd been banging my head on the desk trying to get this silly thing right. MSN search got me nowhere, but Google put you right at the top of the list, and what do you know?
I also removed the Microsoft client after everything was back to normal, and it got rid of that stupid request for a password at every log-in.
Again, thanks!

Removing the client succeeded in restoring stability to my system, but I was unable to re-load the client. Instead I get an error message saying the files are not on the CD. Is there a trick to reloading the client?

I recently had the experience of having to reformat my hard drive after a malicious virus infected my system, and I got everything up and running -- but, with the dreaded MSNP32.dll error message you've all been discussing. I have a somewhat pragmatic question: This is my home computer and I'm using a DSL hookup to the internet with no problems. Apart from the annoying message, is there any reason that this error needs to be fixed? In other words, what am I not able to do that I would be if I wasn't getting this message?
Thanks for indulging what I hope isn't too silly a question.

OK. I have tried removing 'Client for Microsoft Networks' from the Network panel of the Control Panel, and then Extracting the msnp32.dll file WITHOUT SUCCESS. Now I had the Windows 98SE CD, and the file was 'not found'. So, I went to another PC I have with Win 98SE installed, and put the file on a diskette. Is this acceptable?
+1 | ![]() |
Thankyou ..
to the uninitiated user response number 3 plus the idea that you have to go to the control panel to remove the client ..
which is the bit I hadn't worked out.
but now its done ..YippEEEEEEE!!!Thanks Mesich..

Hmm, to everyone saying that files are missing from their Win98 cds, they're not, they're just compressed within CAB files.
Use an archive searcher such as the one at
www.gold-software.com
(with free trial period) to find the files.

Dear Mesich:
Forgive my ignorance, but how do I "remove Client from Microsoft Network"? Where is Microsoft Network (I'm unable to find it). And, where is (and what is) the "Client"? Sounds like it works for those who already know what and where those items are located, but unfortunately I do not. I appreciate any help you could provide.
Thanks!

Click on My Computer>Control Panel>Network.
Click on Client for Microsoft Networks the Click on Remove. You may get a message that states your network is not complete.

Alec,
Not a silly question.
I too am using a DSL connection.
You do not need Client for Microsoft Networks. As stated above you may get a warning that your network is not complete.Disregard and reboot the computer.
You could live with the missing file error and everything will still run fine though.
Good Day!

Hello all:
Mixed blessing – grateful to find this site this evening, but frustrated that after several hours of trying the fixes mentioned previously, I’m still getting the dreaded “missing file” message upon booting. I’m here because I reformatted my Toshiba laptop and reloaded Win 98 SE. Networking had worked on this machine before. I believe my situation is the same as that of Rob S. (above) except that I’m using a Linksys Etherfast 10/100 PCMCIA card. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling the client and the card. I also copied files from a desktop that works ok, and still no luck. Yikes, I never thought I’d be spending this much time on this. Any thoughts are appreciated!
Thanks,
Steve

RobS,
Let's try the following. I realize some of this you have already tried but let's try these all at the same time.
In the control panel and network. Delete ALL of the protocals, clients adapters, and services.
After doing so reply to not restart the computer.
Go into the Device Manager and Remove the Network Card.
Go to Start and Shutdown the computer.
Remove the NIC Card from the computer.
Reboot the Computer and once it is up go to Start and Shutdown again.
Reinstall the network card and load the drivers for it.

Hey guys!!!
Thanks a lot for all and sorry for my english! However i tell you how i solved the problem:
1 delete from DOS prompt msnp32.dll from anywhere you have on pc
2 remove the network client and then reinstall it how it has been said over
3 after doing this DO NOT reboot and do this
4 create a condivision of files and printers doing Add and then condivision, being sure cheking the 2 boxes; then click OK and let the system drag the files from Windows CD!!
5 after this say YES to reboot prompt!!!
6 you have done it (i solved this way)
It is REALLY important to switch on the condivision of files so Windows reloads and re-register msnp32.dll into the system!!
Thanks all, hoping this will help someone!!

I think Justin, Owner and Webmaster of the site, deserves a big applause here for his efforts and time in running the site. Also another round of applause to the moderators and other wonderfull people that do their part and spend their extra time in keeping this a great forum.
Forget the applause I think they all deserve a standing ovation!!Take Care and I am very glad all worked out for you.

Just a note...
I too had this problem after reinstalling Win98. I did a search and came across this completely solution on Micrsoft's site.
The problem: it didn't work. I tried this three times and I guess what they say is true - third time is a charm!
Everything works now... one thing I noticed -- the necessary network program/files (ie net.exe, etc) are also not present whem "msnp32.dll" is missing.
Anyhow, cheers to you all!
- Brian

Mesich -
I posted on May 5, and finally got past it this AM (I put the problem aside for a few weeks and decided to try again). What I found is that my laptop was not reading the files from the Windows 98 disk properly, so I ended up copying the appropriate files from my desktop via floppy as I was prompted (seemed like about 15 or 20 "dll" "vxd" etc. files. FINALLY this worked. Thanks for the guidance. You saved our precious landfill space from one more laptop PC!!

Hi Mesich, hi all,
Mesich... I don't have that MSnp32.dll problem but coundn't help adding these words!
I don't know why I recorded this thread in "My Computing.Net list" but it was always blue!
I don't record any statistics but I think it's the most wonderful thread I've ever seen!
77 messages! January 26 for the first one!
Perhaps 50 people writing "Thank you" from Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, etc.It seems Google provided many people with this thread.
Even if you wrote "... Read elsewhere this worked", congratulations to you!
You are a wonderful guy!
Even if I don't have that Msnp32.dll issue... Thanks a lot, Mesich!
Enjoy your day,
Gérard from Paris, FranceP.S.: Thanks to Justin too for managing these site and forums!
Thanks also to so many people "making" these forums as they are!
