Hello: I have the new MSN toolbar that is supposed to include a pop-up blocker but mine doesn't. I'm told I should download Internet Explorer 6.0 at least. I went back to I.E. 5.5 because of so many problems with Internet Explorer 6SR1. Do you think I should try Explorer 6.0 again? Or would I be better downloading another pop-up blocker? Any suggestions as to which blocker is best? Thanks so much.

Hmmm Popups...
If I go to Weather.com I get a popup to take their survey to improve their site.
If I go to McAfee's Virus information site I get a popup for some PC speedup program.
Another site I visit (can't remember which) I see a full screen Verizon ad.

These are all expected popups that are related to the site I am visiting.

I don't use a popup blocker program and am not annoyed by the 'expected' popups. I view them as the cost of visiting the valued sites I visit.

There are other 'popups' that are controlled by installed adware/spyware programs that produce a multitude of unexpected popups.

It is my opinion that popup blocker programs are designed to stop the unexpected popups.

You can not cure a cold with a box of facial tissues. You need to get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids and take aspirin.

You can not cure popups with a popup blocker. You can only stop them from displaying. In doing so you are adding two separate uneeded processes to the CPU. One to get the ad and one to stop the ad from displaying.

So, the question is...which kind of popups are you wanting to block; the expected or unexpected popups?

Or, do you really want to block popups or do you want to cure your PC from the infection that is causing popups?

Additionally, the programs that cause the 'unexpected' popups will also make it appear that there is something wrong with any version of IE that you may be running.

IE6sp1 is a good browser if it doesn't have a cold.

Just my perspective on the subject of popups,
Bryan

Very good points, Bryan. Sometimes, popups are inevitable. Click 'em off and go on. I am using both the Google toolbar and the MSN toolbar, Right now, Google says 40 popups were blocked, and MSN says 0 were blocked. I still get popups. So what? Run the Spybot and Adaware and keep your virus checker up to date, and USE them.

Meanwhile, happy surfing.

Oops, almost forgot.

IE6 SP1 is running very nicely these days. I have had no problems with it since the earliest days. Whatever bug was in it then is gone, now.

Yes, that is how to cure a PC with a 'cold'.

Hello everyone,

As usual, nicely stated Bryan.

I agree Bob, use Spybot and AdAware.

I would add the Windows Updates and Spyware Blaster to the list.

I highly recommend Spyware Blaster to everyone to stop the garbage before it gets on.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Hello again: Thanks for all the info. So Google sounds a lot better than MSN's toolbar huh? Good to know. By the way, I DO use an anti-virus program, AdAware and Spyware Blaster. Thanks again for all the quick responses.
