Did you just encounter and remove a virus? Msinfo.exe is not a valid win98 file.

WE GOT THE SOLUTION FOR THIS NASTY PROBLEM!!!!

It's caused by a CWS Trojan wich hijackes your computer by surfing certain sites, such as pornografic and others.. firstly it shows you the msinfo.exe error, and slows down your internet-connection-speed massively while hijacking your starting-site to a very advertising search-site.

AND HERE'S THE SOLUTION:
just go to www.spywareinfo.com/articles/cws/ and download the CWSHREDDER zip-file to fix this trojan. it works within 25sec. and makes your machine clean again! CWS trojan cannot be found by other spy-ware-defenders such as ad-aware or spy sweeper.

finally, after a search of one day and half a night we've done it, yeah!!

all the best, mike

Thanks Mike! This was driving me crazy. It looked to me like some kind of Trojan or virus, but nothing I tried could locate it. I searched with Norton Anti-virus and Ad-Aware with no success. I ran CWShredder and the problem is solved. That was definitely the cause.

I ran the CWShredder and it fixed my problem.

Any way of blocking the CWS Trojan?

barbi! just download the cwshredder zip and store it onto your computer. then open the zip-file by doubleclicking and also doubleclick on the cwshredder.exe-file in the winzip-programm window. then everything happens itself and cwshredder cleans up your computer. good luck! mike

Mike, you are a god damn star mate!

It's been driving me crazy for a few days this thing. Every time I opened the computer, the msinfo.exe thing popped up, and I thought, Doh, must have deleted a wrong file or something, but havent got round to looking into it. Past few days, running the internet has been a right hassell because allthough my connection speed has been maximum, the loading of the images seemed to take normal time, but to scroll through a page of posts on a bulletin board would literally take forever, and I thought my memory might be packing up or something

Anyway, searching to replace msinfo.exe on the computer through google, I stumbled across this, and had no IDEA it would have been a trojan virus. Downloaded and ran CWShredder, and Bam, problem solved!

Thanks Mike, you're a legend!

Neil

If you get an error about a missing DLL, MSVBVM60.DLL, it's because you need to download the VB runtime libraries from Microsoft

I found a complete list of registry and win.ini entries and files that these leagalised trojans leave on our computers here:

Finally!!!! I have been searching & hoping to try & find a "cure" for this slow-poke computer. I got rid of the Trojan Virus & am now getting the same "msinfo.exe" prompt. I tried to download the shredder & when I do, Realplayer pops up. I have tried to open zip files before & cannot do so because Realplayer opens up & then says that I cannot access the file. Do I need to install a program to open zip files? And if so, then what should I use?

Thank you!
Bonnie

How do you find the WIN.INI file? I have been searching for it to no avail. I do know that when I click on Start, Run & type in msconfig, in the start up menu there is "run=C:\WINDOWS\..PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\msinfo\". Should I uncheck it & where do I go to find it to delete it?
Thanks, again!

Thanks, Jayrae!
I found that when I clicked the WIN & the notepad popped up, it had msinfo.exe in it. When I downloaded & ran the CW Shredder & checked again, those words were gone. My computer runs faster, typing is so fast now. Before, I could type apage before the letters even started showing.
I did notice that now when I click start & click on Documents, there are files that I did not put there. Should I delete them?
They are: Advertising.com95, Avenue Alnc43, Browser toolbar 19, Save Now, Save Now 3, Sex Tracker 1, Sex Tracker 14, Wild Tangent 77, Xupiter 33. When I click on Properties, it says Target Type: Winzip Files, Target Location: Recovery, Target:"C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.1\Recovery\SexTracker14.zip" Click on start in & it says "C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.1\Recovery", Shortcut Key: None, Run:Normal Windows.
They all have the same properties.
There is also a Win file & when clicked on this comes up,[windows]
load=
run=
NullPort=None
device=Canon Bubble-Jet BJC-4000,CANON800,LPT1:

[Desktop]
Wallpaper=C:\WINDOWS\APPLIC~1\MICROS~1\INTERN~1\INTERN~1.BMP

sCurrency=$
sDate=/
sDecimal=.
sLanguage=enu
sList=,
sLongDate=dddd, MMMM dd, yyyy
sShortDate=M/d/yy
sThousand=,
sTime=:
And the properties say C:\WINDOWS\win.ini
Should they all be deleted? I ran a Virus check with Norton Virus & it was all clear. I would like to delete them if possible, since I didn't put them there.
Thanks, Bonnie

I agree -- Mike rules -- thank you, Mike!

Now did anyone else notice damage to their computer? I don't know if this was related to the virus (the Dell guy says it was, but I think it's just because he can't fix it). Ever since, everything on the computer -- files, windows, desktop, is projected REALLY LARGE on the screen. So you can't even see whole documents, just a portion of them! He took me through an hour of steps then finally said I might need to re-format the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. An image driver problem or something. Luckily, this is an old computer and I've got all my data on a new one, but does this make sense to anyone? Has anyone else had this problem?

By the way, to fix the original problem (the virus/work), I was on the phone with Dell technical support (for which I pay many hundreds of dollars), and the guy helping me wasn't getting anywhere. After about 10 minutes on hold, I googled the error message, found this board, and followed the link. When the Dell guy came back on the line, I asked, "Is this a virus?" And he said that's just what he figured out. Then he proceeded to direct me to the spyware site. So that's what Dell support is reduced to -- some guy with a phone and access to google.

Thanks so much for helping me get rid of that damn message! Norton advised me a Trojan horse had been detected on my computer and stated they were unable to fix it and recommended I put it in "Quarantine", which I did. Then the message popped up twice every time I started the computer. My guru recommended the computing net message board and there you were with the solution! cwshredder worked like a charm and cleaned it up in 25 seconds!

W A R N I N G: The cure is NOT guaranteed.

This virus has become stronger, and is making itself impervious to getting the fix from www.spywareinfo.com/articles/cws/. In fact everytime I try to go to that web site to get the CWShredder.zip file, the virus though latent and invisible even afer turning off the msinfo.exe in windows system configuration win.ini, and having healed all files using my antivirus (which is AVG6.0 and very good), that somehow I am instead rerouted not to www.spywareinfo.com/articles/cws/ but instead to other sites, either non-adult web indexes, or adult website indexes which in turn repopulate more trojan related viruses into my system. As soon as I am rerouted from spywareinfo.com, AVG6.0 pops up a danger alert that the new virus is asking to be given access, and even though I disallowit, the virus then propagates itself onto various files within the harddrive (usually windows/temp or program files/etc..). The virus names all begin with DOWNLOADER and then have a secondary node, and third node. So Far these have been named: Downloader.Dyfica.B and Downloader.Toolber.G (correct spellings), and are both trojan horses. I have a feeling that although these strains seem to be single host infections that a spread is possible from those that are not anti-virus protected using the web.

Thanks again to Mike who saved yet another person from insanity. Use of CWShredder seemed to clear almost everything up, no more messages re msinfo.exe or missing .dll file, but I am having trouble opening Word.

Any ideas from anyone as to whether this could be related? I double click and it just gets hung up, you see the opening screen showing ownership and then everything freezes up.

An earlier uninstall and re-install didn't work.

In advance, thanks for any help.
