hi plz can some1 help me my laptop is running windows 98 and it keep restarting in dos mode and i don't no how stop it

at the dos prompt type:
cd\ (press enter)
ren autoexec.wos autoexec.bat (enter)
ren config.wos config.sys (enter)restart

Ding
You've lost me. Never heard of files with a .wos extension nor can I imagine why you would want to replace autoexec.bat and config.sys with them.I'm suspecting that you just intended to disable autoexec.bat and config.sys by giving them both a .wos extension and got your commands the wrong way round? This looks more like it:
at the dos prompt type:
cd\ (press enter)
ren autoexec.bat autoexec.wos (enter)
ren config.bat config.wos (enter)
restartPETE
Autoexec.bat & Config.sys are not necessary for Windows, only DOS based stuff. It is possible that they have some corruption so it is quite a good idea to temporarilly disable them as given, to see if this allows Windows to start. If so we would need to go a little further. If not they can be "renamed back" as per ding's posting.Derek.W

how about the good ol typing 'win' at the dos prompt...then when shutting off pc, make sure 'restart in ms-dos mode' is not checked O_O
/end

no my laptop still starts in dos
when i put ren autoexec.wos autoexec.bat is comes up with file not found - autoexec.wos
and when i do it the othere way it says the same with autoexe.bat

now it comes up with mising files himem.exe, emm386.exe, power,exe and mwdp0400.exe can en 1 tell me where i can download them from.

After the boot (& errors) if you're ending up at the dos prompt (C:\>) type in;
cd windows
then
dir himem.sys (I don't know of a himem.exe)
Do you get a dir listing for the file?

If necessary you can extract himem.sys and emm386.exe from your W98CD using DOS. Can you confirm that you are using W98 first edition?
Obviously autoexec.bat (which you don't appear to have) and config.sys are out of the equation. If the last thing you did was restore them (or attempt to) using #2 then fine, otherwise do #2 again sometime so that you are back to normal with them - ignore file missing report.

ya i think i have deleted autoexec.bat and config.sys where can i get a copy.
it runnin win98 se and i dont have any disks for it

Unless you want to run programs in DOS (such as games) then the lack of autoexec.bat or config.sys is not a problem. Windows should boot fine without them. They can't be downloaded because they are made when Windows is installed. The only reason they came into the equation is in case they contained some error within them that was causing your problem.
I'll send you W98SE versions of Himem.sys and Emm386 so watch your email. Both of them go into c:\windows. I normally prefer to interact on the forum rather than email but if you have need to respond to me put the word addme somewhere in the subject line. This will ensure you bypass my email filter and I'll then add you to my approved list.

ya i think that i have deleted autoexec.bat and config.sys and were can i download a copy from
it runs win98se

I put those two file names in Google (worth you looking) and at a very quick glance found that power.exe is for Dos6.22 and mwdp0400.exe is also for DOS (if not W31).
Have you for some odd reason ever put DOS622 on this machine? W98 has it's own DOS and doesn't need DOS622. They are not on my W98SE. Maybe your W98 was an upgrade from W31 and they have been left lurking there. There is also a vague possibility that they are a virus (sometimes they use old DOS names in order to try to fool people).
It may be that they are being wrongly referenced in either System.ini or Win.ini (both in c:\windows). If you can't get to these .ini files using NotePad via Windows or Safe Mode you can get to the c:\windows folder in DOS.
Each can be edited in DOS by putting the word edit in front of the file name. Any line containing power.exe or mwdp0400.exe can be removed. By all means copy the .ini files to a floppy before you start in case you should want them back again in their present form.
I have DOS622 on a CD. Power.exe appears to be compressed so if need be I can try to decompress it and send you the file. I've no idea where it goes (possibly in a folder called c:\dos if my memory of W31 serves me right). Frankly I doubt it will help and don't think this is the right way forward, but will persue it if you wish.
Derek.W

... a bit more. Power.exe is the old DOS622 power management file. I've managed to decompress it using the ancient EXPAND command and I'll send it to you. It does indeed go into c:\dos and is almost certainly remnants of W31 upgraded to W98.
It is almost certainly being specified in config.sys.
I'll send you the file just for laughs and it should at least shut up one error message. We can then look further into the other one.
I have to add that the whole point here is that you need neither of these files, which is why ding suggested you disable autoexec.bat and config.sys to stop these hang-ups (renaming them to .wos). He just slipped up the order when stating the commands.
The version I gave in my #3 should have worked if the files were there. I kinda suspect finger trouble, easilly done.
Hope you follow the drift of all this. Essentially you satisfy the errors by replacing these ancient missing files you don't need, or you prevent autoexec.bat and/or config.sys from saying it wants them. The latter would be my preference.
Derek.W

Sorry, not sure what you mean.
Are you saying you've disabled autoexec.bat and config.sys and now the machine won't start?
Derek.W

It would be best if you could use complete sentences containing specific information. There is no "one file" that makes Win98 work.
If you've deleted random files, perhaps reinstallation is in order - although you appear to be one of those who have 'lost' the installation CD
good luck to all involved

it now says that 'windows 98 is now starting your MS-DOS-based program. iv tryed exit dont work

When you get the dos prompt after you start your system, type in;
cd windows
then type in;
edit win.ini
Check to see if the Load= and run= lines contain anything. They should look like this;
[windows]
load=
run=If there is a program name or application after either of these lines post it here.

Forgot to add; to exit the edit utility, hit ALT, then F, then X. This should return you to the dos command prompt if you haven't attempted any changes to the file.

Derek, I figured that had already been covered, but it was easier to provide the short answer than to go back and read ~all~ the postings. (Getting quite long I'd say.) ;>)

Yep Dan, quite understood and agreed.
Just made me wonder if I was having trouble getting through to the poster, especially because I had also said this in a short email containing the file.
Derek.W

this is a very simple answer to your problem:
edit your autoexec.bat with ms-dos editor (type edit <enter>) and add the simple word "win" at the bottom! PROBLEM SOLVED

I just love confidence winass - we shall see.
Interesting possible workaround but it is not normal to have Win in autoexec.bat so there must be some underlying problem.
Derek.W

Hoo-boy. There are problems with any O/S if you don't run it or maintain it right. Are you giving up?
