Hey,

I recently installed dos 7.10 over windows 98,
everything went fine. I tried to access dos through windows via ( start>run>command> ) it opens a dos window and gives the message "Invalid command.com
Enter the correct name of the interpreter"
>>_

I tried pointing it to my dos folder(command.com)and/or windows(command.com)...no luck on both attempts. I turn on my comp it boots to dos, then I have to type "win" to run windows. Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

Win98 includes a windows version of DOS 7.1.
Evidently the version you installed (why you did it is beyond me) is not compatible.

Booting from a win98 statup floppy and typing:

sys c:

will restore the correct version 7.1 command.com and io.sys. However it might not restore the correct msdos.sys. If that's the case, post the contents of msdos.sys (first dozen or so lines) and someone will help you.

If the msdos.sys file is not a text file, then a good msdos.sys file will have to be either created or copied from another (very similar) system.
A reinstall of win98 (on top) should also fix the problems.

I tried to use a boot disk (bootdisk.com) to try the first fix.No luck.

The ms-dos.sys is not a text, however I sent it to notepad to copy the first few lines below:

;MS-DOS 7.10 System Configuration File
;(C)Copyright Microsoft Corp 1981-1999
;=====================================

[Options]
AutoScan=0
BootDelay=2
BootGUI=0
BootMenu=0
BootMulti=0
BootSafe=0
BootWarn=0
DisableLog=0
DoubleBuffer=0
Logo=1
SystemReg=0
;
;For compatibility with Windows 9x GUI only:
WinVer=4.10.

[Paths]
windir=C:\
winbootdir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C

I geuss my next step is to find a good copy of the ms-dos.sys, any clue where I could find one..I have a copy of windows 98 on my drive.

The msdos.sys file is a 'little' different then the normal win98 file, but it should work.

The reason it boots to dos and does not start windows is because of the line:
BootGUI=0
Use Notepad and change it to :
BootGUI=1

As for the "Invalid command.com
Enter the correct name of the interpreter" error, I would try replacing the command.com files with one from a win98 startup floppy.

Hi,

Hard to tell from what you said what went wrong with the boot disk.

***
The lines you posted from "ms-dos.sys" look like text to me.

The second file which DOS loads at boot is:

msdos.sys

so if your msdos.sys somehow got named

ms-dos.sys

that may be part of the problem.

After:
It worked out great! :D Thanks Ham ! M2 !
The reason why I installed was to get the LFileName support. Im going to do alot more reading the next time I try to do any butchery to my box.

Thanks Again.

Good work Nolo!

"came acroos a file "msdos.---" it just says ";reformat" inside..?"

That's a new one to me. But it wouldn't do anything, the ; at the beginning of the line causes the line to be ignored by the system.
