Some info would help - this is a new (attempted) installation?

What was on the drive previously, any idea?

How large is the drive?

What are you booting with - a 95A floppy?

Running fdisk and selecting the 'display partition information' will tell you much, although 95A was not capable of dealing with larger FAT32 or NTFS (XP type) partitions

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

You have a version of Whamblows NT, W2K, or X tra P utrid installed.

You must "fdisk" the drive to remove the "non dos" partition, and the RE partition the drive in FAT32, AND THEN after that, FORMAT the drive using a boot disk appropriate to the media (98?) that you want to install.

That'll also show if the drive isn't partitioned and maybe if it's partitioned but not formatted. As jboy suggests run fdisk, option 4. Post back with those results if you're unsure of the situation.

"i would run fdisk but don’t know how."

It's not that difficult - from the prompt enter:

fdisk

.. and follow the instructions

.. more

You want to remove the old partition and recreate a new one compatible with whatever version of Windows you hope to install - - then format, reboot and run Windows setup

may also be of interest/help. Deals with installing '95 and '98/ME; also includes a basic how to fdisk...

Also if you have '95a then it does not support fat32; you need 0SR2 for that.

Hi Guys/Gals,

Im having a similar problem, except when i run fdisk i get a run-time error 6003. I had win 98 instaled previously and it was a 12.5gig HDD. ive also tried formating it and get invalid drive specification. Bio is picking up that the drive is operational at 11.2gig. What can/should i do?

Regards

Daniel

I'm not sure what the 6003 error is.

Generally, you boot with a 98 bootdisk and run fdisk at the prompt. Is that what you're doing?

A kwik www trawl suggests that error would seem to be related to installing some software (when there is already a working OS installed). No evidence of it per Fdisk/format etc... Presumably you are running Fdisk via a '98 bootdisk?

Apparent drive capacity discrepancy may be due the maths re' how it's calculated?
