After just recovering from a case of "norton make me crash"I would really like to clean out all the old deleted entries in the msconfig/start tab.None of these programs exixst anymore and have long since been uninstalled or deleted.

I downloaded and used the following utilities-Ccleaner-TweakNow Reg Cleaner-Registry Toolkit.I have used the Ccleaner and got rid of a bunch of garbage entries in the registry of old deleted software.I also ran TweakNow and found an got rid of more crap but the entries in the start tab remain.

The PC is booting up and shutting down much faster now.

Can any of these programs clean out the old start tab stuff?

How about scanreg /opt /fix?

Also whats your opinion of XOFTSPY? Thanks

Scanreg /opt merely compacts the registry

Scanreg /fix repairs invalid entries, but that is not quite the same a using a registry 'cleaner'

I use V-com's "Fix-it" suite, and never had a problem, but registry cleaners can be overzealous - although most will create backups

JV's Regcleaner is a popular one - older versions are freeware

Why not clean out the Msconfig Startup tab manually?

"How about scanreg /opt /fix?"

They just compress (/opt) and scan the Registry for formatting errors (/fix). They don't delete any entries.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

A registry search for those redundant msconfig entries will find them, as long as you are happy in there.

I've got to rush off right now but I can give you the locations sometime if you want them.

Seems to be:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-

(note the trailing " - " )

As well, this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\Disabled Startup Items

In #2 here:

http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/159473.html

I went into some detail about manually removing those entries. I think software like tweakui will do it too.

DAVEINCAPS,thanks loads.I now have a nice clean msconfig/start tab.I edited the registry keys and sub keys per your above link with no trouble.I will now be able to backup a nice clean registry.
I still have a few software remnants to get out from norton/symantec.I'll probably be finding those for some time. Thanks again. Seahawk

You're welcome. And good luck with removing the norton remnants. Norton stuff can sometimes be difficult to 'flush'.

I got one more for you before I hit the sack.
Under the HKLM/Software key I cant seem to get rid of the Adaptec key.No matter how I delete it comes back on the next restart. Its annoying but if I have to live with it so be it.

I'll check back in the morning. Thanks again. Seahawk

Sometimes files run that will rewrite an entry if it's been removed. Offhand I can't say what would cause the adaptec key to return. You may need to uninstall adaptec (assuming it's still installed).

You could probably run hijackthis and see if anything associated with adaptec is running.

Sorry Sabertooth, I didn't mean to upset you.
To do it manually, open Regedit and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Shared Tools/MSConfig/startupreg. Delete sub-keys for each item unchecked in MSCONFIG. Now if this still isn't what you want, then I'm out of here. Good luck.
