Hi everybody,
How can I fix a shut down problem whereas I can't find msconfig.exe.Should I reinstall my PC to have it back?
Thanks in advance

Are you running win95 or win98? As msconfig is not availible for win95. This program is only for win98 and later.

Ludo
You can get start up control panel at SureCool - this is the same as the win98 system configuration utility, allowing to adjust start up programs.
Did you test your video card?
Caroline

That was going to be the next thing I told him once I found out if he had 95 or 98. Sure Cool Download Page has a Utility that works on the win95 programs that replaces the msconfig program for 98.

T - great minds think alike eh! - mind you, until last week, I didn't realise that Win98 msconfig would work on Win95, so I tried it out, & sure enough, it works fine.
Caroline

I knew that it did, just haven't got around to putting my other pc back together again to install it on it. My other pc will only hold win95 because it doesn't have a co-processor on it so I'm stuck with win95 on that one. I did have the co-processor but every time I put it in the thing refused to boot and the guy said the processor was good, so that is why my pc is in pieces now. Had to strip down to M/B to work with it. But soon as I get it back together I will put the msconfig on it.
Hey did you know this about win95...
You can go into your win98 C:\windows\command folder and copy your deltree.exe and scanreg.exe to a floppy and put them in your win95 C:\windows\command folder and they will work? I have done this every time I install it along with the msconf utility. Pretty much the only thing it is missing then is the theme capability. And I have even mastered that. Just have to copy a few more files but I can make it work.

T
Yes, I already knew about deltree, but have never tried scanreg - thanks for the info.
Caroline

Just a little point T&C. I've put scanreg on several W95 m/c's, no trouble. But beware the command scanreg/fix. On one of them it decided it didn't like the registry and tried to restore it automatically W98 style, which of-course it couldn't.
The machine then failed to boot up and after the sweat had dried I realised that I had
saved user.dat & system.dat before I started.
I was therefore able to copy them back from DOS using attribs etc etc. Just a friendly
warning eh!Ludo - hope you don't mind us all using your posting for a bit of a chat!

Well Derek, I have a registry back up trick of my own I am well know for using and have posted it here a few times. You know me well Derek and you should know I sit down at the pc with helmet and knee pads on with my crash record. So I take a 3.5 floppy disk and put it in the drive. Then go to C:\windows\regedit.exe. I right click on it and choose send to: 3.5 floppy. Then I take the floppy out and label and date it and put it in a safe place with my boot disks. Now if I crash all I do is copy it back to C:\windows from the dos mode. Simple yes but very effective. Try it. Always have a perfect back up of the registry you want.
But I do have to say I have used the scanreg.exe/fix in win95 and I had no problems with it. Course it was on my SCSI too and that thing takes a licking and keeps on ticking. Right now it is waiting patiently to be put back together when I get around to it.

All points taken T
But, you wanna try that Regback stuff of mine - instant recovery and no fiddling about with floppies! Type in one word from DOS and you are back in business - you don't even have to re-boot, it's all taken care of. Be daring, the best time to do the registry copy is when all is going well - even on your super duper machine, now you just must go along with that eh! Leave the paste until you are in trouble - but that's the time you'll really love it.
