how do i remove things from the startup list in msconfig? you obviously uncheck them to remove them from startup, but how do you remove them from the list?

The first thing to do is uninstall the programs that you don't need. Old entries that have got stuck there, despite doing a "proper uninstall" can be removed using the registry but this should not be the first option.

... just in case you are forced into it the registry entries appear under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
RunServices-

In Run type regedit then navigate to
HKey_Current_User
+Software
+Microsoft
+Windows
+Current Version
Run
Run-
RunonceHKey_Local_Machine
+Software
+Microsoft
+Windows
+Current Version
Run
Run-
RunOnce
RunOnce Ex
RunServices
RunServices-
RunServicesOnce

.... forgot to add "these are for the unchecked msconfig entries". The checked ones are under Run & Services (without the minus) but it would seem rather odd to remove these.

I agree with Derek.
The checked items in msconfig, startup will be in Run & Services.
The unchecked items will be in Run-
and RunServices-.I would check the other entries also, you are there anyway, in the other locations that ? listed.
Remove all that are related to the Program that is the issue.
You could also run RegCleaner and it will find and delete all of the unnecessary entries in the registry.
Good Day!

You will also find UNselected entries in \Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Disabled Startup Items
(if the original was in Startup)and in Win.ini on the NOLOAD= and NORUN= lines (if the originals were on the LOAD and RUN lines)

Let's overstay my welcome on this one and possibly risk a bit of controversy.
I think it is worth avoiding what I jokingly call "basic criminal instincts" (which is like announcing the verdict then having the trial).
My suggested order (been there and now wiser?) goes like this:
Firstly:
Before unchecking things in msconfig make darned sure there is no normal provision for preventing start-up items "within the provided software itself". Often you can right click an icon in the system tray (next to the clock), a toolbar, a control panel or go to something in your start menu/programs list. Have a good look around!Secondly:
Uninstall programs properly if not required, only reaching for the registry when the msconfig entries still obstinately remain.Derek hath spoken.

Well I'm back also and probably overstaying my welcome, but......
If you uncheck anything in msconfig to keep the program from loading at startup and running in the background unnecessarily then prior to uninstalling that program you should go back and place a check next to it in msconfig.
Restart the computer and perform the uninstall. Whether it be from the uninstall that came with the program,(best choice) or via the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(next best choice).
Exit the program by right clicking on such in the system tray and selecting exit or the equivulant.
Good Day All!

I believe I left out an entire paragraph(thought) in the above response.
Here it is again.

You may receive a message that you the must shutdown the program before uninstalling, as it is running in the background.

You are winning (just) on the "missing para" syndrome but I'll work on it....
... and why no rude comment about my general philosophy at #7. I shall sulk you know.
Derek

Task Scheduler is notorious for coming back after unchecking it.
Change your settings in Maintenance Wizard and it's back. This one is better shutdown by going in through the system tray icon.
Cheers,
Bryan

Hi, Sarah.
The easiest way I know to delete orphan entries from the msconfig list is a program called StartMan (freeware). You can download it from here
Hope this helps.

Bryan
... now you've got me thinking. Way back I must have got shot of that tray icon, and the entry in msconfig. Darned if I remember how.
Derek
