Can any body tell me what mscdex.exe file is and what exactly does it do.

mscdex is a real mode driver for cdrom to be used in MSDOS. So when you boot into dos from a boot disk or drop into dos from windows (not in a dos session opened from windows) then the mscdex allows the cdrom to be seen.
