Each time I look into my Temporary Internet Files to clear them there are always the same 4 folders in there:
WULPROTO http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/selfupd/x86/w98/en/WULPROTO.CAB
IUIDENT http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v4/IUIDENT.CAB
CUNPROT2 http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/selfupd/x86/w98/en/CUNPROT2.CAB
CodeSign PCA http://crl.microsoft.com/pki/crl/products/CodeSignPCA.crl
the first three are zipped and the latter a Certificate Revocation List.
Would someone please tell me if these are genuine MS updates and what they are doing in TIF. I always delete them but am intrigued to know what they are. They are always there regardless of the sites I have visited.Regards
M

You know what a CAB file is, right? It is a compressed file. To learn how to use (open) CAB files, go to the MS Knowledge Base.
The only reason why those CAB files are there is because you ran windows update and for some reason, they were not cleaned up after installation.
Just to be safe, I would write those CAB files to CD.
Then, I would go out to MS-DOS and I would manually delete them. This should really get rid of them. Are you familiar with MS-DOS commands?
To change directory, use the command CD
To delete a file, use the path and the full
file name, for example:delete C:\filename.CAB
Some worms and trojan horses, and maybe some malicious scripts will try to HIDE
their true identy by saying they are
are from Microsoft. You need to run a full virus scan and make sure you are not infected with a file or malicious script.
It is possible that there is a HIDDEN file somewhere that restores these files time and again. The DOS Delete command will definitely wipe out those files. So if they are restored again, you know that SOMETHING ELSE...another something, is writing them back again...most likely, a trojan horse, or perhaps a malicious file of some kind.
I won't lecture you on how to use virus software.

They are not updates but they are genuine MS update engines none the less. You have installed 'Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification' and these files are the results of the unseen query at Windows Update site for updates for your machine.
To remove this autobot, find the quoted string above in Add/Remove Programs and remove it. You can visit the site manually to do the same thing anyway, for about another week until 98 support is dropped? No word on what happens then, at least anything believable from authoritive (MS) source that I've seen. And I'm speaking only to what happens on my 98se box when I try to visit Windows Update site specifically - I don't need to see a link to End of Life statement yet again. Those who do know (MS) what will happen to 98 at Windows Update site in the next few weeks aren't talking, at least not loud enough to be heard over the din of second guesses and rumors.
