I put in a new hard drive and loaded most of the hardware except for the PCI Multimedia Audio Device. It's looking for it and I can't tell what I have (have really poor vision), but I remembered that I was using the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth for sound. Where can I find this driver? My original copy and backup are corrupted. The driver itself is not showing up in device manager and I've been searching all week for one to replace.

Assuming that it is the original sound card that came with the computer, you will find this page useful

I've downloaded the needed files, but I get this message when trying to play a midi file: no audio hardware is available or the hardware is not responding.

I have ESS Allegro PCI Audio (WDM) but still no sound. Is there something I'm missing?

Probably the correct drivers. That sound card did not come with the computer.

There are a couple of different sound chips that were labeled Allegro. On the largest chip on the board you should find the number 1988 or 1989 or less frequently 1930.

Alternatively, you might like to download Everest Home. This freeware program will tell you meore than you will ever want to know about your hardware.

Once you have identified which chip you have, you can download the correct driver Here.

While you are at it, remember to update DirectX.

I have a ESS Technology Allegro-1.COMM AudioDrive audio adapter (as stated by the program EVEREST Home Edition) and i installed the correct driver. Whenever I try to play midi's, i still get an error message that the audio hardware is not responding. I can play wave files however. >_<

After a lot of digging on google (and putting together the right keyword string), I finally found the correct software driver! Thanks all for helping. I have the driver burned on CD so I won't have to go through this again!
