MPREXE.exe causing Win98 boot hangup

Comment:
Occasionally, on a Win98SE machine after logging into a Novell and NT network, Windows fails to completely boot to the desktop and stalls. When I hit ctr/alt/del it tells me that mprexe is "not responding". I went to the Microsoft database and found only information about page faults it may cause. I ran a patch it suggested but it didn't cure the problem. Anyone else have any ideas?

MPREXE.exe is not a virus, it sounds like you must have some configuration problems, or a corrupted file, or something that should load that is having troubles loading. I am not real good with troubleshooting, but I suggest running a bootlog at bootup and look at the report to see what fails to load successfully. MS Support Knowledge Base has an article that helps you to read the bootlog I believe. Here is the Windows 98 Resource Kit Tools report about the file:
"file size: 28672, local destination: Windir\system, cab file (cd-rom): win98_41.cab, cab file (on diskette): win98_36.cab (disc 31),
File Description: Windows 98 Multiple Provider Manager. This file helps determine where network requests are sent when more than one redirector exists on the computer in Windows 98."
