I can play all mpegs including those with a *.DAT extension like those on Video CDs. But one that i have throws up an error that reads #ES3277 and MMSYSTEM277 and an MCI error in an alert box. It says try restarting the computer (the same message persists). The file is not corrupted. All 'mpeg players' i have tried have thrown up similar errors. Help...

The .DAT extension is used on a lot of files that are not multmedia files. Is there any chance that you are trying to play one of those other types?
I just did a search and found several .DAT files that are actually text files that can be read with notebook.

It's definately an MPEG because its part of a two CD set of which the second works fine in Media Player.

Yeah, i've got some vcds that are dat and aren't working. Some do, some don't. I've tried media player, real player, and quicktime but can't get it to work. Do you know if I can convert it to mpeg?

You will find the answer here:

It's an MCI error because some of the CODECS have been corrupted or replaced with others of a different version!

Mediaplayer 6.4 doesn't seem to support QuickTime 4 movies ( with .mov extention)
Older .mov video's will play fine. The solution is to install a QuickTime 4 codec or
simply install the latest QuickTime 4.1.2 player. Or wait for Mediaplayer 7.0.

I've been having similar problems (I used to be able to play .dat movies, but I cant now)

You dont need a converter however, just rename the extention from .dat to .mpg and it'll play in MediaPlayer fine.
That's where my problem comes in..I dont want to have to keep copying and renaming my vcds just so I can watch em =P

YAHOO!

After about 6 days of hunting through forums and websites, I found a rather abstract site with a possible fix for the MMSYSTEM277 errors (and Media Player not playing .dat movies). I just tried it and it worked for me, hopefully it'll work for some of you.

Find the scsihlp1.old file in your Windows\IOSUBSYS directory and rename it to scsihlp1.vxd. As soon as I did this and rebooting, my VCD .dat files started working again!!

=)

Thankyou Sabre,

I agree with you, I have been trying to play *.dat files on windows media player on Windows 98 OS but without any sucess from last six months.I had tried all the possible video players but nothing finally I changed scsihlp1.old file in my Windows\IOSUBSYS directory and renamed it to scsihlp1.vxd. As soon as I did this and rebooting, my VCD .dat files started working.

I feel there is a problem and this is a definite solution(which not even MS has recommmended).
So all you guys with dat files try doing this and your media player will start playing.

Good luck
P.S sometime the file name will be scsi1hip.old its same as scsihlp1.old.
