MP3s play too fast

I am running Win 98 on a new pc. When I play back some of my burnt mp3s, they all play too fast. Sounds like Alvin and The Chipmunks! I have a SoundMAX driver, but am unsure of the card I have. The directx test seems to work fine in dxdiag. Anybody have a cure?
