Comment:

Dear...
I'm trying to get my daughter's MP3 player up and flying. It's an Autobaby CCH-518. (I doubt this means anything to anyone, since I can't find anything about it outside of their website.) To cut to the chase - I don't think that windows 98se is recognizing the player. The software installed fine, but when I click on "RDiskUtility.exe (in the Program Files/MP3 Utility folder), which I assume is the MP3 program, I get "Not Detected Removable Disk"
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Is this device intended to work in Win98se? If so, there should have been a USB driver included. If the above listed computer is the machine to be used for the MP3 player I think the USB 1.1 may be an issue. Check the required system specs for the player. I assume this device connects VIA USB. If so, are the USB ports installed and operational? Check in device manager.

Also check that USB is enabled in the bios. Usually under the Peripheral Devices Setup section (or similar).

Does the MP3 player use a plug and play USB hard disk, or does it use removable media like flash cards?

Yeah I said it!

Not knowing I would guess that rdiskUtility.exe is used to dismount the device before physically disconnecting (Dismounting) it from the PC.

Read the instructions of course.

Try restarting the PC and then connect the device to the PC.
Go to Windows Explorer to see if it shows as a Removable device. I would also expect some sort of system tray icon (rdiskUtility.exe) to appear that would allow you to dismount it before disconnecting it.

Yes, the player is intended to be used with windows 98se. A disk with the drivers was included. The specs say that the USB connector is "High Speed USB 1" Yes the USB ports are connected and operational.
Explorer does not indicate any removable devices. Where would they show up? The USB section of the Device Manager shows an unknown device with a yellow exclamation mark.
"Does the MP3 player use a plug and play USB hard disk, or does it use removable media like flash cards?" I'm not sure what you mean. It's a very small thing, about the size of a large cigarette lighter. The specs say that it has a 128 meg storage capacity. I'm assuming that it runs off a memory chip.

I just got an autobaby and I have Win98 too.. Took me a while and lots of cursing to figure it out but ive almost go it..The instructions and website are quite useless.. First, When you plug the player into the computer driver port thingy.. Then a removable driver icon will appear in My computer when you open windows navigation. This is where you put all your songs. If the player is plugged in, when you put files in that folder, they will automatically be uploaded onto your player. Now.. the tricky thing is that you have to change the format.. I havn't had time to upload the songs in the right format yet but im pretty sure that you can do this with the installed program Sound Conver Tool. Ill probably have it all figured out tonight since I finally have the time.. Feel free to email me if you're still confused. Good luck.

Hi, I had a problem similar to this when the driver wasn't installed in Win98SE.
I think this is the page where I downloaded the driver. I remember it was on the fujitsu website as the driver should be generic. Anyway it worked for my mp3 player.=)

Hi All,
Well the problem was a faulty USB cable. I e-mailed the manufacture, Autobaby, and they told me to try plugging it directly into the USB port, sans cable. When I did that the device showed up in "MY Computer" They're going to send me a new cable.
Thank you all for your help.

I got mine to work perfectly fine.
1. But I'm just wondering before you put any songs in it, what was the used up memory space. 2.Currenly when I recorded my songs on it all of them where cut short about 5% at the very end.
3. Then when I tryed to put them back on, it says the folder cannot be deleted because the directory is not empty. So I have hidden stuff taking up space. Help...
4. Did you get this mp3 through some Rogers cell phone promotion?

Hi DDawg,
I don't know how much memory should be there if there are no MP3s on it. I would imagine it won't be the entire 128mbs, maybe something just shy of that. I'm sorry, I can't check that our either, it's my daughter's and I was just getting it up and running for here. Autobaby has a website. Maybe they can answer that question. Sorry. My son-in-law was given it when he purchased my daughter's cell phone. I don't who he got it from, but it does sound like a promotion.

O.k. so it too me forever to figure out how to get this thing to play. I would down load the music, just dragging and dropping from My music folder to the MP3 player, then nothing. But the music folder, say U2 would show up in teh recording files, the player would be full but when I went to the MSC mode it would say no files!

So after much grief and playing around I figured it out.

1. With the power on the mp3 player plug it into the usb port, when the mp3 player shows up as an extra drive in "My Computer" Create a folder in the new drive, you can name it what ever you want. DO NOT PUT ANY MUSIC INTO THIS FOLDER!!!!

2. Make sure that all the music you are copying to the drive is mp3 format.

3. NOW copy - drag drop etc. the music files into the extra drive, repeat DO NOT COPY THE FILES INTO THE FOLDER CREATED!!!

4. When youlook at the extra drive in My Computer, yo should se the folder and all the seperate songs in the drive. Now it should play the music.

5. Man do the instructions such ass!!! Must be something lost in the translation.

Other than this major head ache, it is a pretty cool little player and I do like the fm transmission feature.

John Clarke et. al., I too had problems with the CCH-518, as my computer (XP) would reboot as soon as I plugged the unit into my USB port via the cable, or unplugged it. It came as a give-a-way with a Rogers' Motorola phone. In a pdf that I downloaded from the Autoplay site, it showed the manufacturer's URL, which is www.SZCCH.COM. To save you some time, it is located in ShenZhen, China (at the Hong Kong border), so the english is poor and the site is dysfunctional. Thus, there isn't any support of worth. The problem with my unit seems to be with the cable since plugging it in directly doesn't cause the rebooting, so I'll have to call AutoBaby to get a replacement. Thanks for the heads-up John, regarding the cable. As for the memory, I found that there was a little less than 128 mb on the drive. I think this is because of hidden/system files which take up a bit of space. Autobaby's Canadian website is www.autobaby.ca. Hope that helps. And thanks for the help. Gerard

I got this player as a promotional gift from Rogers. It worked first time when plugging into my Windows XP computer (using the supplied cable), but won't work when plugged into a Windows 98 box. The software on the CD does not appear to contain Win98 drivers; just MP3 programs and a firmware update utility. I tried downloading the Fujitsu drivers as suggested above. Don't really know which of these drivers to point windows to when it asks where the installation disk is (I don't know where the Fujitsu drivers got installed). When I first plugged the player in, it said it was a USB 2.0 Flash Disk. I didn't think Win98 supported USB 2.0.

Hi Battista,
I don't have the installation CD any longer. (I gave it back to my daughter when she took the unit.) If you can't get them anywhere else, let me know and I'll get them from her. I don't think you have to download the USB drivers for this. Windows 98 already contains them.
Hi Jack,
I was under the impression that the installation CD has the windows 98 drivers on it. Also, my manual says that the unit it USB 1, but when I installed it, it shows up as USB 2. In any event, I was told the version of USB is not an issue.

I have just received an Autobaby CCH-518 MP3 player through a Rogers cell phone promotion and I seem to be having a little trouble setting it up on my computer.
I have a Anthalon 800meg machine with 256 megs of ram and about 160 gigs of hard drive space.
My OS is 98se
I have done everything asked of me and yet it still does not show up under My Computer.
I thought it might be the cable and plugged it directly into the USB port and nothing!
All the MP3 player does is stay lit and says waiting.
Under device Manager....USB Controllers, it shows up as......USB 2.0(FS)Device...yet still nothing under my computer?
The software installed fine, but when I click on "RDiskUtility.exe (in the Program Files/MP3 Utility folder), which I assume is the MP3 program, I get "Not Detected Removable Disk"
I know my USB port is working as I have a digital camera that I use to download pictures from and when I connect that to my computer ,it shows up under my computer as a removable drive.
Please help as I would love to give this little gizmo a try.
Thanks

I got an Autobaby for christmas, it was part of a motorola cellphone package as well. It seemed to work perfectly at first. But I've started having issues with it after a few days of getting it.
It says the total volume on the drive is 119m. I do believe it's supposed to be 128m, as stated in the specs... I am not sure if it was like this originally, I played it by ear when I got it (christmas makes people do all sorts of stupid things).
Besides the space problem, sometimes I get 'format error' messages when I play a song. The songs work perfectly well on my computer. I even tried emptying the player and then putting in a single "bad" song. It worked fine...
I really appreciate any light anyone could shine on this.

I also recieved one of these acursed AutoBaby CCH-518 units however, my problems with the unit seem to be quite different from those mentioned thus far.

With my unit the songs transfered and all work fine the first time however, the unit is constantly turning off and on at about 5 minute intervals. It is very annoying to be listening to a song only to have the unit turn off half way through it. The unit is fully charged so I know it is not an issue of the battery being empty.

It powers up automatically and shows the word "starting....", then goes to a screen showing the unit and a monitor, both with Z's coming out, then an arrow apears between the unit and the monitor and the unit shuts off.
I've tried the direct plug with the same results as the cable.
I've tried numerous plugs (hoping to get a solid connection).
The battery icon in the upper right corner shows full (solid black).

Hey guys and girls.

I though I'd left some explanations for geeks out there (don't worry, I'll make things simple)

I've got the player through Rogers as well. I already have an iPod, so I didn't really care about doing anything with the MP3 player. So I though, let's connect it using Linux.

You should know that the cable is scrap. I think they inverted the wires inside the cable. But plugging the player directly in the USB port works.

First of all, as for the 128MB capacity, here's the story. As far as I can tell, the memory is formatted using FAT16. This filesystem was used on old version of DOS and Windows 95. It has the disavantage of low disk capacity (2Gig), but allocates data with less wasted space. The drive has less than 128M available because some of this space is used to store file names and locations. This is the same thing as a table of content in a book: it uses some pages of the book.

As for the formatting thing, well, the MP3 player is really borked when you get it. Running a check disk, you could see some cryptic file names ending in MP3. I guess it has something to do with the manufacturer. Maybe it's Chineese music or something ;)

As for reformating the drive, I don't know if it's doable in Windows. The memory doesn't have any partition information, so Windows could be unhappy about it. Secondo, I'd be worried about flushing important data, as I don't know if the program that plays music inside the unit is itself in the memory (another reason for having less than 128M)

Oh, and btw, if you try using the FM transmitter, don't forget to plug in earbuds! The MP3 player uses it as an antenna.

Anyhow, that's the end of my testings ;)

Hi Samps,
If your files have an .mp3 or .wma extension you should be able to just drag, or copy and paste them into the appropriate entry in "My Computer".

John;

If it is indeed a 5 hour charge cycle, then that is not the cause of my difficulties. I charge the unit daily for periods in excess of 8 hours (while I sleep). So it is definitely not an issue of the battery not being completely charged. Also, even if it was an issue of the battery not being fully charged, the unit still turns off and on while connected to my PC much like with Ishmael.

I really can't complain, I did get it for free, but at this point it seems to be more hassel then it's worth.

Hi Cena,
Are your USB ports installed. What does your "Device Manager say under Universal Serial Bus Controllers"?

Hi Fetish,
I assume your USB ports are installed? If so, try plugging the unit into the computer, without the USB cable and see if you get a new entry under "My Comptuer"

No additional drivers are required if you are using Windows XP or Windows 2000. A device driver is provided on the CD for Windows 98.
End of quote

Do note that in order for Windows to see a device the device must be on after it is connected while Windows is up and running.

Quote
Transferring MP3 files to your Device
Connect the device to your computer. You can either use the USB extension cord provided or
plug the unit directly into your computer’s USB port.
The first time you plug the device into your computer’s USB port, the computer will identify the new hardware. If you are using Windows 98 a new device driver will be required which can be downloaded from the provided CD and installed. A new folder will be opened once your computer has updated its device drivers. You can now copy files to this folder, delete files on the device and create new folders.
End of quote

Is everyone following the instructions provided?

I do not find this device on the MS Win98 Hardware Compatibility List.

This is all that I have.

Well I've read over the entire posts. I do have some of the problems you people listed out, but mainly they are all simple problems. I think someone mentioned the unit shuts off after 5 minutes, all you have to do is take your unit out of auto sleep mode. This can be done by holding down the menu button and then navigating over to the SYS menu and goto "Power off" section and adjust accordingly.

As for the web site, the usefull one is www.autobaby.ca and you can download the 98 driver from there. If you plug this unit into your computer it is a USB mass storage device and will show the 119 MB free space even though its a 128 Key, I have formated the drive and the space stays the same, this is actually a bad version of FAT 16.

As for the power on problems, I had them to, but I figured out after the unit goes to sleep the power switch was still in the on position, so how could I turn it back on? I put the switch to off and then hit the play/stop button and then moved it to the on position again and there you go, it started without force or cursing.

Alot of you seem to have problems with what this player can play in terms of file formats. Your best bet is to use the MP3 format, you get about 1 minute of music for ever MB. This is at the 128bit rate, obviously the lower the bit rate the more music you can fit on it. The higher the bit rate is the more space each music file is going to take up. When it records, it records little wav files of really low bit rate, wich ends up being just a little better then telephone quality. Never use WMA for anything ever, its M|crosft Evil in a file.

FM transmitter is pretty good to, it works for me up to 15 feet away.

Thanks Daryll,
This is useful stuff. One of the respondents to this thread told me that the Autobaby site drivers are corrupt. He said that they admit to as much.

Got one from my brother for Christmas and after fumbling for a few days I "googled" autobaby and found this site....I took 5 minutes of reading and everything works great now....
1. Cables are junk - plug it into your USB slot
2. Only use MP3 format music - 1 minute to every MB or so....
3. Turn off the auto sleep and turn up the LED display period from 3 sec to 12
4. the drivers for 98 don't seem corrupt, they are working fine on my machine
5. Patience and research will help you pull out less hair.

Can I load mp3 files into Autobaby with MusicMatch or is "drag-and-drop" the only acceptable method?

Hi Cuong,

I have 2 computers. One with Windows 2000 and the other with ME. I plugged the autobaby into the one with 2000 first and have had no problems. Dragged my files over and within a few minutes I was listening to MP3's. I then also a few days later plugged it into my other computer with ME on it and it worked fine too. I hadn't realized it's not supposed to work with ME.
I don't know if first using it on the computer with Windows 2000 made a difference or not. But I have had no problems using it with ME. As for any specifics of how I have things set up... that I don't know. I didn't have to do anything. I plugged it in and it automatically showed up and worked so. So there is at least one person who can use it with Windows ME.

Ohh, and besides, it also works on Mac (OS X) if anyone is looking for the info.

I've plugged the Autobaby on my girlfriend's Mac and besides having to reformat the player to MSDOS format, nothing went wrong.

The only thing that caused problem was the resource fork (.filename.mp3). I have to figure how to get this out. As a quick fix, those files can be manually deleted with the Autobaby.

I'm having some trouble with my Autobaby MP3 player. I have windows 98. I downloaded the MP3 driver from the disk provided, but when I plug in my MP3 player to the USB port, and go to 'My computer', it doesn't have a new 'Removable Disk' thing there. Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch. Please email me or post.
