Greetings, I bought a new mouse today. It's a Mitsumi optical scroll ps/2 interface. My only problem is I can't click on a page and scroll down with the little wheel in the middle. I have to press down on the wheel and then the little circle comes up and I move the mouse down. But, I'm trying to do it how i've always done it. By left clicking on the page and scrolling down using the button in the middle---not by pressing the button in the middle and moving the mouse. By the way, the mouse didn't come with any disk or anything. While I'm discussing my mouse. Today my old mouse went out. I had to borrow a mouse in order to do some troubleshooting--to see if my mouse was broke or not. How do I set it up where I can use the computers keyboard arrows, if my mouse ever breaks on me again? Thanks for your help.

To use the keyboard arrows you have to go to double click my computer->control panel-> accessibility options-> then mouse. You check the option where it says to be able to use the numeric keypad for the arrows.

Thanks for the help hotkaree69. For some reason when I go in control panel there isn't any accessibility options link. That's strange because I remember having one before I reinstalled windows a couple months ago. thanks

Control panel, add/remove programs, Windows setup. Place check mark in accessibility options and click OK. You may need your Windows CD if the .cab files were not copied to the hard drive.

Then open Mouse properties and click buttons. Select universal scroll for button #2.

Thanks Hotkaree and Dave. Hey Dave that worked to get my accessibility options. But, all I could change was the keyboard settings. I didn't see an Universal scroll button. Here is what I see.

accessibility options
click on mouse
use mouse keys box or you can click settings
if you cick settings here are the boxes:
all of them have to deal with pointers, numlock,Mousekeys(speed acceleration, etc.)

Also if you were referring to the mouse link in the control panel. I click on that and get...
Buttons
right hand or left hand
double click speed and test area

That's all it has in buttons. Then I click on pointers and motion. Not anything to do with scrolling.

Am I missing something else? Or can I download something online to fix this problem? It's very aggrivating. Thanks a lot for your help.

Might be worth searching Google to see if there are any more appropriate drivers for your Mitsumi optical mouse. It is presumably using those that came with Windows.

"You don't say what OS you use" but the drivers on W95/98 are likely to be very dated.

.... ooops, I was wrong. Just started searching for drivers for your mouse and it appears it doesn't need any, hence no CD.

i think they assume that you will install the generic scroll-mouse driver, or at least, that windows will detect it.

Sarahhh is probably correct. It appears as if Windows did not detect this mouse. Have you tried add/remove hardware in control panel? You could try the MS generic scroll mouse driver. Can't hurt.

I am using windows 98se.

Thanks for your responses. I contacted Mitsumi customer support today. I was told it is plug and play. So there is no need for me to download a driver.

My problem is I remember some time ago--before I had windows reinstalled. I remember having a similar problem. And, I went to the control panel and clicked on Universal scroll. But, I don't see that anywhere. It's missing. So does anybody know how I can add this to my cpu---without reinstalling windows, lol. Or is there any way I can download something or a program to allow me to scroll with the mouse. Thanks for your help.

I don't know of a special program and you shouldn't need one.

Try shutting off your computer, put back your normal old fashioned mouse then reboot.

Once this is working properly, shut off your computer, insert the optical mouse instead (normal non-usb socket) and switch on the computer again.

It's a long shot but I'm hoping that the above procedure might allow the mouse to find the appropriate W98 drivers.

Something to try. Called Mouse Emulator, it uses certain keyboard keys to move, and for click functions. It is freeware, small footprint, and is found here http://www.nonags.com/nonags/miscu.html a little over halfway down the page.
