The computer that I’m using is an Emachines 400ix (400MHz)(IBM PC/AT), Intel Pentium II/ Processor: Intel MMX – Celeron. I have 64 MB RAM. I’m running Windows 98 and have an uptime of 0:02:50:52.

A few days ago my mouse began acting erratically, the cursor stalling and popup menus mysteriously popping up for no reason while moving the cursor or pointer. The next day, the mouse stopped working altogether. That day I started my computer and booted up, I got a dialog box or prompt telling me that my computer me it didn’t detect a mouse and that I should install it. I went to Control Panel and Add New Hardware and selected PS/2 Port Mouse. I checked the PS/2 cable jack and port. I then restarted my computer and had the same problem. The Mouse that failed was a Logitech PS/2 Port Mouse. I decided to replace the mouse. I installed an iWare Plus PS/2 Port Mouse made by SysGration, file version 5.70. I installed the Mouse and the installation disk that came with it and restarted my computer. While booting up, I got “the blue screen of death”, telling me there was a stacking problem involving ‘MinSPs’ and Vxd’s in System and that I had a limit of 5 SPs. I then “pressed any key to continue” and my computer froze up during boot up. I couldn’t do any thing else except shut down. I then restarted my computer and everything ran fine except the right mouse button. The next day when I restarted my computer, I got the prompt telling me to install the mouse. Device Manager had it listed as a Problem device.

I went into Microsoft System Information, Software Environment and found the following System Hooks: (1) Hook Type – CBT / Hooked by – Qdcspi.dll / Application – CSINJECT.exe / DLL path – C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ Qdcspi.dll / Application path – C:\PROGRAM FILES\NORTON SYSTEMS\ CSINJECT.exe. (2) Hook Type – System Msg… / Hooked by – Lwmouse.dll / Application – SYSMAIN.exe / DLL path – C:\PROGRAM FILES\IWARE PLUS\ Lwmouse.dll / Application path – C:\PROGRAM FILES\ IWARE PLUS \ SYSMAIN.exe. (3) Hook Type – Mouse / Hooked by – Lwmouse.dll / Application – SYSMAIN.exe / DLL path – C:\PROGRAM FILES\IWARE PLUS\ Lwmouse.dll / Application path – C:\PROGRAM FILES\ IWARE PLUS \ SYSMAIN.exe. The Drivers for the new mouse (iWare Plus PS/2 Port, File Version 5.70) are: SYS3DVXD.vxd, VMM32.vxd (Vmouse.vxd). The Drivers for the old mouse (Logitech PS/2 Port, all File Version 8.00.532) are: Imul.vxd, Imouse.vxd and Imouse.drv. The Mouse that I’m presently using is set at IRQ 12.

Today I started my computer and my computer couldn’t recognize this new mouse. I went into Device Manager, but this time didn’t have it listed. I found nothing using Dr. Watson and I found nothing using Norton System Works. I used the Norton Antivirus Utility on my entire system and found nothing. Uninstalled the new mouse and it’s software and there reinstalled the old mouse. It ran fine for a while and then acted erratically before failing altogether. Going through Control Panel Add New Hardware and then restarting my computer a second time didn’t work.

Any help would be appreciated, John.

Hi John
Not sure if I can be much help. I have been having the same problem with the same symptoms. I have just replaced my third mouse within the past year. They have all been Logitech scroll P/S2 mice. I have switched for the time being to a USB mouse and hope that will solve my problem. My next step will be to run diagnostics on my mobo to test the P/S2 mouse port. I want to find out if there is something causing these mice to short out. Hope this gives you some ideas. Good luck!

Hi Mindseye,
You said your using a USB Mouse. Did you use an adapter? Or a mouse with a USB jack? Did you have to configure it? Or is it Plug-n-Play?
John.

Hi John
It's a USB mouse with a USB connector. My machine has two USB ports on it. I just plugged it in and it worked. Didn't have to load any drivers or do anything at all. The only problem with a USB mouse is that it won't work in safe mode. BUT ... now I am having more problems which makes me wonder if there isn't a more serious problem other than the mouse.
Good luck to you and HTH
