Comment:

When I 1st boot up the mouse works and might work for 5 min or a couple of hours but then it freezes and I have to reboot. It tells me there is no PS2 mouse connected so I have to reboot again and again until it recognizes. As the day progresses it gets worse. The keyboard works fine. I have tried 3 diffreent mouse on it and they all do the same thing. I blew out the dust and the CPU fan and regular fan seem to be working fine.
I am not computer literate so please help! You can email me at home if anyone has an answer!

It sounds like a bad mouse port.

Try using a serial mouse instead.

Hi

DAVEINCAPS suggestion seems about right.

I had a similar problem some time ago.

It turns out the mouse plug was not sitting tightly in the PS2 socket & was working loose after a while. The weight of the cable can 'drag' the plug from the socket on occassion (or even just moving the computer aaround a little). Also, if there is not enough 'slack' in the cable the plug can work lose from the socket - with the constant mouse movement, the whole cable can be moving & 'pulling' on the PS2 plug & socket.

However, if the other mice are experiencing a similar problem, then a bad port is likeliest.

Run SFC.exe to check if the mouse driver is OK, as a precaution. SFC.exe is in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. Or go to Start>Run & type SFC & then press OK with your mouse or press ENTER on your keyboard.

Try a Serial Mouse, or buy a USB Optical Wheel Mouse. They are cheap nowadays - even genuine 'Microsoft' brand ones can be bought for less than $20, & are maintenance free & reliable. If you switch to a USB mouse, have your W98SE installation disk handy. When the USB mouse is detected, you are asked for the W98SE Operating System CDROM so that the OS can install the 'Human Interface Device Driver'. Microsoft has more advanced drivers (if you want extra 'bells & whistles') at

Use the drop-down menus to find your product & Operating System.

In the mouse properties program, under the hardware tab click on properties. There you can increase the :Sample Rate and :Input Buffer Length. This solved my problem on Windows XP.
