Good evening,
It seems that ever since I installed an older version of Zone Alarm (2.6.88) that occassionally my Mouse (Microsoft Intellipoint Optical 4.0) and my Keyboard (Packard Bell) will freeze.
It doesn't do it often, just enough to make it very frustrating if you happen to be doing something special.
When they freeze (and they usually do it at the same time) I can not get to my CTRL-ALT-DEL option to see what could be causing the problem.
So I decided to check right now while the option is available. What is showing besides this site and Outlook Express are (1) Explorer, (2) Zone Alarm, (3) Cookie, (4) Rnaapp, (5) Avgcc32, (6) Point32, (7) Systray, and (8) Minilog.
Does anyone see anything listed that could be causing my Mouse and Keyboard problem? If so, any ideas on how I go about correcting the problem?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks and regards,
Phil

Have you defraged your pc lately??
And have you cleared your cache and temp files ??
Here is a program that may help you
System Sec Suite
Also try running Adaware 6 from www.lavasoftusa.com
Hope this helps!!!

Hi Bob,
Yes, I run scan disk and defrag weekly and I also run Ad-Aware regularly along with Spybot and my AVG anti-virus program. I also run a regular cleanup program.
Thanks for the site, I will check it out.

Phil

These sort of things can be tricky to resolve. In effect it means your computer got a bit lost and didn't know how to proceed. It may be some bad reaction with your other software.
I suppose uninstall/reinstall ZA has a fighting chance if you kept the download or can still get your hands on it. If you happen to have some registry cleaner you can apply in between uninstall & reinstall it might help. Reboot in between too.
Also search Google for Freeze or Freeze-ups because I feel sure there are websites around that discuss this symptom generally and make suggestions.
Wish I could help more.

Hi Derek.W,
Thanks for popping in and giving your recommendations.
For the record I have uninstalled and reinstalled Zone Alarm twice, which is no easy task in itself, and both times after the uninstall I wasn't able to connect to the internet until I went back and reinstalled ZA.
The last time I uninstalled it (today) I even went with their uninstalling instructions, but after rebooting and trying to connect to the internet I couldn't do it.
That is twice I have tried to get rid of the program and twice it has 'stuck' it to me ...lol
In the meantime I will keep searching the web for other possible solutions to my Mouse freezing problem.
I did keep my ZA download (thank Goodness). So, maybe tomorrow night when I get home from work I will give it another shot (uninstalling it). I am not really sure if ZA has anything to do with my Mouse problem. All I know is it wasn't a problem until I installed ZA.
Thanks and regards,
Phil

Good luck with it. I agree it is too easy to fall in to the co-incidence trap.
Forgot to warn you about uninstalling ZA, seems you are on top of it tho. I seem to recall a stack of registry entries that have to be taken out as well as the files it leaves behind all over the place.

Hi Phil...Well this sounds hard to believe but as uve already done with Ad-aware n spybot..I suspect a hardware prob. I too had freeze-ups earlier when both mouse n keyboard bcom dead...My frequency of freeze-ups was like once in an hour...it was less when the PC was idle..but when i used to work..it would freeze often...I found that my SMPS n MB were the source of prob..inflated capacitors..just chkout that aswell..u might get the solution..Im tellin this as u seem to have done with most of the software stuff.
Happy Computing!

Phil;
You mention "IntelliMouse Optical 4.0", & "Microsoft Intellipoint Optical 4.0". I don't know if this article would pertain to you, but one type mouse (Intellipoint) needs Win 98 and up. Good luck,

Hi all,
Thanks for all the informative posts. I will keep searching on how to successfully remove Zone Alarm.
It is a 'IntelliMouse Optical' I am using. Sorry for any confusion I caused.
Thanks and regards,
Phil

Phil;
Have you seen this site?

Hi JimmieC,
I appreciate the link you sent me. I have already tried it that way EXCEPT I didn't remove all the files individually as they present it.
I saved it as a favorite and will check it out further tomorrow when I get home from work.
My mouse hasn't froze at all tonight. So for the time being ZA is safe ...lol It might not even be that it is the cause of my problem but it was the most recent change to my computer.
Thanks and regards,
Phil

On W98 scanreg /fix can often work like an aspirin on these sort of problems.
If you search around in Google there is somewhere you can get it to put on W95. You must have the full kit (which I think includes registry fixes).
Don't be tempted to just transer the scanreg file off a W98 machine though. Although scanreg /fix works fine, if something goes wrong the system trys to restore W98 style and get's in a right old muddle.
Worth getting the proper kit though because it gives you scanreg /restore and 5 old copies of the registry to fall back on. The W95 backup is virtally useless (gone before you have time to fiddle around in DOS and use it).
Personally I use .bat & .reg files (more control). I've sent them to one or two folk because they work on W95 or 98.

Morning Derek.W,
Thanks for popping back. I will search around tonight when I get home from work and try to check out this 'scanreg/fix' option.
But as you already know ... it would take one awefully large aspirin to cure my computer ills ... lol
Thanks and regards,
Phil
