well i have replaced the cmos battery for the third time and the time and date seem to be the same each time i enter the setup..that is great i was able to change the time and date and save it..
although start up still says
checksum error and
push f1 for defaults or
f10 for setup..now i cannot get into windows at all..
start goes just past the windows logo screen
and it hangs there forever..
any suggestions?it seems that when i could get through to windows it was operating very smoothly but the startup is a nightmare.
thanks

I'm not clear on what you find when you re-enter the BIOS. Are the date and time found to be right or wrong?

I also don't know if the 'Time/Date' is correct now or not..
Anyway, try this: Enter the Bios setup and enable the 'Reset configuration' option.

sorry about that not very clear message.
when i enter the bios the date is now correct(after i changed and saved it)
the time which i changed to the present time and saved the change..goes back to a different time.
so the date is correct and the time is not..plus i cannot get into windows..
start freezes during startupi really am getting down with this i have been trying everything i can think of..no luck yet
thanks

If you power down the machine and when you power back up, the time is equal to the time that you powered down, it would seem that your motherboard battery is either bad, inserted backwards or is not connecting for some reason.
The battery is needed to keep the clock running when power is removed from the machine.

Then you need to check your memory out. Download and run memtest86 from a floppy disk. If you don't want to do that then open the case and remove all but one stick of the memory and reboot. If the message about checksum error continues, change the memory one by one to see if any of it alone eliminates the message.

If i press F1 for defaults it opens up fine but then i have to change the time each time as the default time/date is set for 1998..
is there some way to know what the actual default settings are and then set them myself with the correct time/date in the bios and then save the changes..?
but then i would have to be able to get the computer to just start with all those savings when i turn it on..bypassing F1 F10 Option..
when the computer boots up (after hitting the default F1)
it reads about the audio drivers and then
says dos key installed then goes to the log on screen and then opens saying i need to change the time asdaylight savings settings have changed??will try now to download memtest 86
thanks

It'll open the daylight savings time box if it detects a date change that overlaps a DST change. That would be the case if the default date and actual date (you changed to) were in different times of the year--one in daylight and one in standard time.
I'm not sure if the beeps are significant. You may want to do a google search for 'compaq beep codes'.
The cmos setting you would need to check after it resets to default would be date, time, HD identification and IDE floppy controllers enabled. That should be enough to get it to boot into windows. Any on-board hardware such as sound or USB support would need to be checked also but that's a secondary issue as it wouldn't stop the PC from booting to windows.
Another thing to check. Maybe there's a 'clear cmos' jumper in the on position that's preventing the changed setting from being kept.
