i have a compaq presario 7360. win98se, 500 amd, 64 ram. 3 out of 4 monitors used on this machine will not work. it has an embedded video chip, no video card. however, placing a video card in does not work either. anything else i can try? all 4 monitors will work on another computer. thanks.

Well, 3 out of 4 leaves 1 that does work - last time I checked anyway.

Describe "Will Not Work" in a little more detail - If the Video Adapter (onboard or not) isn't working the BIOS Post should fail. Maybe you've just got an issue with the refresh rate and the monitor?

when i say 'won't work', that's it. there is power to the monitors but nothing comes up onscreen. i can hear windows loading. after a minute or two, the hard drive light stops coming on. i assume windows has finished loading. through this, no setup screen comes up on during post, though there is some screen blinking or movement. if drivers are needed, i can't get on screen to install them. the one monitor that does work is set on 'plug and play' with the default refresh rate. that setting should work on the others, shouldn't it?

The default refresh rate may, or may not work - although it's not something I'd suspect.

If you hit the Escape Key (usually) during the Boot Up, you should see the standard (DOS Style) messages. If they're seen, then the problem is probably in Windows. Try booting to DOS - with a Boot Disk.

Set windows to default vga settings. Then try the other monitors.

Also, if you test on a secondary vid card, make sure that the onboard video is disabled in BIOS and the Init Display setting is set to PCI or AGP, depending on what you're using. Dunno how Compaq configures the computer, but you may have to change jumper settings on the motherboard to disable the onboard video. The refresh rate has Absolutely Nothing to do with a monitor not showing up during the intital POST screen.
