I apologize for not having all the technical specs for you, but here's the prob....running win 98 se. and I get half way through the boot sequence.then the monitor shuts down...I've tried different monitors, a new vid card, and fresh memory, and still, I have this problem.....I even tried to reformat the drive, but of course..the monitor shut off.....any help would be appreciated.

Can you boot from a rescue disk into command line only and reformat from that - available from bootdisk.com

It's not the hard drive, because the hard drive is not even being used when you boot from a floppy. It seems to me that you have eliminated everything except the bios. Can you enter the bios 'setup' routine OK?

Maybe, I misunderstood. Were you able to boot from the floppy OK? Did the monitor quit when you tried the format?

That's the strangest problem I've heard about it quite a while! If your monitor's AC cable is plugged into the system box, I would try moving it to a wall outlet.

Did I misunderstand another thing. What did you mean by 'shuts down'? Does the monitor 'power off' or just go blank?

This sounds like a hardware lock. Have you tried booting into safe mode? Often when you have this sort of problem it's a hardware issue. I would remove any unnecessary hardware from the machine (sound cards, network, etc.) that you don't need to actually boot the machine and try it. If it boots all the way up, you can replace the hardware one piece at a time till you find what's causing the problem. Though after reading all the post I would believe either the monitor or video card is to fault, one other possible source is the power supply itself. I encountered a couple of weird problems over the years that were caused by power supplies that were on the fritz. Good luck.

I'll try removing the hardware and rebooting, I hadn't thought of that....I have tried different monitors, and video cards, so I don't think it's them...I'm leaning towards a power supply error. although ONLY the monitor shuts down...the keyboard lights also are unresponsive, but the computer itself, stays on....

With your comment about the keyboard, I would place my bet on the motherboard. While I, like you, don't suspect the powersupply, I would try another just because it's a simple thing to do.

Whoops, you do suspect the powersupply. Oh well, it's still worth a try. Tracking down a MB problem is pretty much a process of eliminating everything else.

Have you looked at your cpu fan? Especially if you have a stacked double fan. What happens to these puppies is the outer fan takes the bearings out of the inner fan and it stops working while seriously impeding the effectiveness of the outer... It doesn't take very long for a cpu to overheat and lock up a system. As for completely shutting down (or off) a monitor I have no idea, unless it turns off when a no signal is detected.

Well, just to keep you updated....let me summarize here....I am working on a computer, that the monitor shuts down on, during every boot sequence. I have tried replacing....the video card, the monitor, the cables, the outlet to shich it is plugged in, I have changed the RAM, I have removed all individual cards and rebooted, and still this problem, persists. I have given up, as this exceeds my knowledge....and advised the person, (my nephew) to take it to a local computer shop...I thank you all for your help, and will certainly keep you posted as to what it is.

Well I had the same problem with my Monitor too. But this one sounds odd, cuz I had to send my monitor for repair(to the manufactures service depart.) and they fixed it within weeks. The problem was with the transmitter. Sorry I can't help with one.

Well, that sure is one for the books. I cannot understand how a motherboard can cause a monitor to power itself off.
