Monitor stays black

My computer monitor works fine when first turned on for the day. I have screen saver at NEVER, turn off monitor after 10 minutes of inactivity, and Hard Drive set to go off after 20 minutes of inactivity. When I want to re-awaken the monitor, it stays black. I have to reboot. This is not consistent as it may go 3 days without doing this and then it acts up as described. It is a Compaq Presario. The hard drive fires up when re-awakened (hitting esc. or moving mouse) but again, not the monitor. Turning the monitor off and then on won't do it. The whole system has to be re-booted. Are there possibly monitor settings that may be still working against Windows settings or any ideas? Thanks.

I leave the computer on all day and thus the same with monitor and thus would still like to use the power profile of Windows. I don't feel the profile is going bad (but,I may be wrong) as the computer hard drive settings work fine. It would seem better to try to troubleshoot something else but what? Are there separate energy saving features of monitors that may also be kicking in and double dinging me with the Windows features also going?
