Monitor Shuts Off after Windows Loads

I am trying to help a friend with her computer because the monitor keeps shutting off after windows loads. I turn on the computer and windows 98 loads but when finished, it shuts off the monitor, unless I start in safe mode. I have deleted and reinstalled the monitor but the problem still occurs. I was able to get the monitor to stay on if I restart in boot/log.txt mode. But once I click on a program icon, or option from the start menu, the monitor goes black with a split second of white wavy lines, then shuts off and will not turn back on. Once I hit the button to turn it back on, it immediately shuts itself off again. I checked the boot log and the only thing I found out of ordinary is all true type fonts are listed as load failure such as:
LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\FONTS\ARIAL.TTF LoadFail = C:\WINDOWS\FONTS\ARIAL.TTF Failure code is 0016
I have checked the monitor settings for power schemes and there is not an option monitor shutoff ("never" or by "minutes" or by "hours") Only power scheme selection of "home/office desktop, laptop or always on".

Try this: Boot up in safe mode and reduce the resolution to 640x480.

If you have the win98 cd, I would reinstall the os. Sounds like the os is corrupt. You can reinstall without loosing anything.

Yes, I have it; was just hoping not to have to use it since she is networked with her business computer. But, If all else fails, that's what I'll have to do. Thanks

I guess it's possible that a refresh rate that is too high 'might' cause a problem like that. Go to display properties > Settings > Advanced and see if you can find t.the adjustment
