Comment:

The top third of my screen has flipped upside down. The printing is upside down and the pointer flips upside down when I put it up there. The problem occurred when I plugged in new SoundBlaster speakers though I don't have a SoundBlaster sound card. The moment I plugged them in the computer froze. I rebooted and then the top of the screen folded over like a page being turned. Can anyone shed some light on this and tell me how to fix it? I have tried the reset button, the Sony monitor adjustments, unplugging. I am told the speakers could not have done this. If not, it is a really big coincidence. I just want my screen back. Help? Thank you, maggie

It sounds like your display drivers are corrupted. Try booting to a command prompt by using a bootable floppy. Once you have A:, Type C:> enter, then type cd\windows> enter, then type scanreg/restore> enter. Select a date for a restore file earlier that the problem. Highlight that file> enter. Reboot and you should be good.

Thank OtheHill but I forgot to mention I had done that. I did that right away and I went back 1 day, then 3 days because I heard that Norton update was causing some problems but it did not help. I have also gone to Device Manager and removed the video card icon under Display Adapter but that did not help either. maggie

After you removed the video display adapter form device manager, did you reboot? Changes won't take effect until you reboot. If you did reboot and still have the problem then try updating the display adapter to Standard VGA type. That will give you the default windows diplay. If the problem still persists then it isn't a display driver problem. After rereading your first post I wonder if a static charge was discharged by pluging in the speakers. Is the monitor screen the only thing functioning incorrectly? Do you have access to another video card that you could use for testing.

Scanreg /restore will not replace corrupted files, other than the Registry files and system.ini. But I would think that removing the driver in the system mamnger would restore a good driver.
If it was me, I would try another video card.

I had a similiar problem recently and it was fixed by using the menu buttons on the monitor and "degaussing" the monitor. If OtheHill is correct about static discharge, that could have caused the problem.

Might be the video card I suppose but it sounds very much like problems I used to fix in my TV repair days.
If you can borrow a monitor (or try yours on another machine) it would be worth a shot. Could be a co-incidence, or that the static OtheHill mentioned shot a transistor or chip in the monitor itself.

I should think it was the menu corrections that fixed it somehow, rather than degaussing. Magnetised screens produce "patches of color" due to unwanted pulling of the beam, not foldover which is a problem at the initial part of the frame scan.

Thanks to each and every one of you for your answers. Sorry it took so long for me to come back but my gas furnace went out this evening and it is supposed to be 14 tonight. Had to get someone over to fix it pronto. Anyway, I am thinking it is the video card probably damaged by static charge as suggestd. I have another computer upstairs and I will try to haul this monitor up there tomorrow and see how it does. This forum moves so fast that I will probably be on page 5 by the time I can come back but I will still let you know. thanks again. maggie

Sorry Derek, I have reread your comments and have seen where you also mention a shot transistor or chip in the monitor itself. Another possibility. I am going to start on getting this monitor upstairs now to hook up to the other computer. maggie

Well, now I know. It is the monitor, most likely damaged when I plugged in the speakers. Guess I will have to bite the bullet and buy a new flat panel monitor. Thanks for all your help. maggie

Well, thanks for popping back. Sorta sorry to hear I was right on this one 'cos it will cost you a few bucks.

Still, think how nice it will be with that lovely flat screen.....

Yeah, Derek, you were right on. I am trying to look at the positive side and looking forward to a flat panel monitor and I have a good excuse now. Not real happy about spending the money but one has to do what one has to do. Thanks again, maggie
ps: No one has said so but I guess it was pretty dumb of me to plug in the speakers while the computer was running, eh? Maybe I have learned an important lesson here.

Don't scold yourself. I think you were darned unlucky to cop this one and it might well have been one of those amazing co-incidences. Maybe the monitor was about to die anyway.

I must have pulled speakers in and out of running computers countless time and never had anything like this happen. Maybe with the volume screwed right up you might upset your soundcard but frying the monitor is very weird indeed.

It was only my TV experience that made me even suspect that possibility, the screen symptoms sounded far too familiar.

Thanks Derek, I feel better now. I have blown a tv by turning on an electric heater that was plugged into the same outlet so one never knows what may happen. maggie
