Needed to replace the monitor on my Win98 system, so I acquired an Acer 1716W display... and now it won't display any better than 800x600, and I can't seem to locate an appropriate driver or .INF file for this monitor. the mfgr website is useless.
Can anyone help?

Try selecting plug and play monitor if that option is available.

Thanks for the comments.

a PnP install is what gave me the 800x600 outcome from the generic Monitor.INF file.

I'm running with the on-board video of the Trigem Cognac motherboard that HP used to build the machine.

I don't want to put money into new hardware. I'm frustrated that a new monitor won't operate at the same resolution as the old (but failed) one out-of-the-box. The display control panel won't even give me the option of a resolution higher than 600x800.

Depending on how much syste4m RAM is allocated you may not be able to increase the resolution at the color depth you are using. Try 16bit color and see if you then have the option to go to 1024x768

You didn't understand what I was saying. In addition to the resolution there is also the color depth. If your current settings are for 32 bit color depth then change to 16 bit and see if 1024 x 768 then becomes available. Color depth is called Color Quality in WinXP. The setting is on the same screen as the resolution.

Go to Start menu> help and support> tools> advanced system information> view detailed system info> components> display.

Post the Name, adapter description, adapter RAM, resolution, Bits/Pixel.

Take a look at Display - Settings

Does it say Plug and Play Monitor there, or Default Monitor?

If it says Default Monitor you can change that to Plug and Play Monitor in Display - Settings - Advanced - Monitor.
If you're not sure how to do that, we can tell you how.

If you are using the onboard video, you need to have the graphics drivers for it loaded.
If you don't have them loaded get them here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Pro...

As I recall that 810 onboard video is limited to 24 bit color, max.
You should have more resolution choices if you choose 16 bit color.

If you don't have a manual there is a minimal Cognac one here:
http://www.motherboards.org/mobot/m...

There are two versions of the Cognac mboard - Cognac and Cognac+ -
that manual tells you (in a roundabout way) what the differences are.

OtheHill, Tubesandwires,

Thanks for the replies.

OtheHill, my Start menu does not have the path you mention in your note (Win98SE).

My previous LCD monitor happily supported 1024x768 (but it died :-() so I know the mobo will support that resolution. My suspicion is that it's the OS software response to an unfamiliar display.

I changed color depth from 16 to high to true color and no change in the resolution options (display-properties-settings) higher than 600x800.

The PnP box is checked in the Display Property Setting Advanced tab.

I'm out of ideas where to look any more.

Sorry about that Win98 lapse. In Win98 go to Start> settings> control panel> display> settings> advanced> adapter. What is listed for the manufacturer and how much memory is being used? Your LCD is capable of higher resolution than 800x600. At least in newer OSes. A couple of things could affect that. Not enough system memory, obsolete graphics drivers are two. There are LCD drivers available for your monitor but only for WinXP.

Try setting the monitor refresh rate to 60Hz. Do that at the adapter screen as described above. 60Hz usually works well with LCD displays.

You can also search for a better fit for the monitor type than Plug & Play. Look and see what options are available. Search for that option after updating the graphics driver.

If he's using the Cognac's onboard video, it's built into the 810 chipset.

Jerry51

Windows will probably limit your monitor resolution choices if it doesn't know what graphics adapter (video chipset) you are using.
If you are using the onboard video, you need to have the graphics drivers for it loaded.
If you don't have them loaded
See the link in response 7.

There is very little if any built in LCD monitor/display support in 98SE. For that matter, there is only a little support for them built into XP - what there is there is meant to be used for relatively ancient laptop LCD displays.
You can use Plug and Play Monitor in 98SE despite the fact it was designed primarily for conventional (CRT) monitors, but there are some settings you should avoid using for LCD monitors, such as higher vertical refresh rates.
If you know the max resolution your monitor model can do, you can also select Standard monitor types to suit, in Display - Settings - Advanced - Monitor - Driver, if you remove the checkmark in the box beside the suggested types (probably Default Monitor and Plug and Play Monitor) by clicking on it to reveal the other monitor choices built into 98SE.
Let us know if you need help with that.

Othehill, TubesandWires,
thanks for the assistance. I have tried many of your suggestions (there are even some options for LCD Monitor 1024x768) in the Advanced/Monitor tab, and they don't let me get better than 800x600.
I will play with more 'standard' monitor types and see if I can find one that gives me an improved outcome.

Stay tuned...

Stating you tried many of our suggestions is not helpful. State exactly what you tried and what the results were. If you were to state how much RAM the video is using that would be helpful. Download SIW.exe and post the memory usage for the adapter as well as what color depth and resolution it is registering.

Again, thanks.

Using the on-board video, Intel 810 driver v4.0. Total system RAM is 256Mb.

SIW reports that my max resolution is 800x600, 16M colors... even though it reports my 'monitor type' as "Super VGA 1280x1024".

I have to conclude that the monitor (Acer 1716W) is a wide-screen monitor with an aspect ratio that Win98 does not support at resolutions higher than 600x800. My previous (dead) monitor (Sylvania 468P) happily supported 1024x768, so there's plenty of video ram available... every time I have changed the monitor type and rebooted, the maximum resolution available remains at 600x800. I don't even get an option for a higher resolution on the Display Properties page.

So I will hunt though the various monitor types available and hope to find one that supports this width at a better resolution. Plan B is to find a nominal aspect ratio display to replace this one.

Thanks to the active voices on this forum.
