during computer use, usually beginning an hour or two after boot, my monitor begins flashing the entire screen wildly, forcing me to shut down. there is switching or clicking sound accompanied by this flashing coming from the monitor as well. sometimes if i just reboot, my monitor will return to normal. othertimes, i need to wait about 20-30 minutes. i do not know if this is a problem with my monitor, my video card, or other. specs:
p3 733mhz
intel deskboard w/ i815 chipset
256mb 133mhz ram
19" leoptics comfortview 19ci
inno tornado geforce 2 mx 32mb ram
win98 first edition
ibm deskstar 30gig hdi recently bought my video card about 1 month ago, but the flashing has just begun about a week ago. also, i had my video card overclocked before, but i have returned it back to default settings and reloaded fresh drivers for it, but to no avail. thanks in advance for any help possible.

I think the quickest test would be to use another video card to check it out.
The clicking is probably the relays in the monitor switching. They are getting a signal from your card to switch to another resolution, color or etc.
Since you did replace the video card recently that would be my first guess.

1.have you tried reseating the video card.
2.do you have the refresh rate set properly.
3.try another card if the above 2 don't work.
4.does turning off the monitor when this happens and back on help.
5.do you have a florescent light near your pc or monitor-if so unplug it.
6.have you installed the correct driver for your monitor
7.does your video card have a heatsink/fan is the fan operating.
all I can think of at the moment.

Flash,
When you reboot, go to a C:\ prompt and delete win386.swp. This won't solve your problem but it will keep it from re-occuring.I would suggest going to the system config utility [msconfig in run] and in the system.ini try disabling some of the drivers to see if you find a conflict. Usually a flashing monitor occurs when the vcache loads up and the refresh kicks in on the monitor at the same time.
