Hi,I have Windows 98 and reformatted my hard drive and reloaded win 98 but now I have a big problem. My monitor doesn't display colours/pictures properly anymore and I haven't a clue how to fix it! The colour pixels look really big. I've even tried plugging in another monitor, but it is the same. I've tried adjusting the display pixels in display (control panel) but it won't allow the pixels to be increased on the little slide bar. I'm desperate! Does anyone have a clue as to why my monitor won't display properly anymore? Could it be related to the PCI multimedia/communication device problem messages I get in "Install new Hardware"? Please, someone email me at barbara.bryan@anu.edu.au and Thanks in advance! Barbara

Have you rite clicked on your desktop and went to propertys?
Then go to settings then change it from 256 to 16or24 bit High color ?? HTH

The reason the display looks bad, is because you have not upgraded the graphics card drivers.
you will need to find out what model PC you have and either do a search on the internet for the drivers, or attempt to see if you can install them from the win98 disk.
Have you upgraded the card since you bought the PC??
If you've not changed the card, put the exact details of your PC on this message. IE what model PC, where you bought it from etc.failing this, you can take the cover off the PC and have a look at the card itself. It will either have a model no. on the card, or if its onboard you will need to get the chipset model.
any problems, post them.

Dear Heardy and all,
Thank you so much for your help, I'm sure you're right. I tried to do as you suggested, but the computer failed to download the drivers from Win98. Or the Windows update page.
As for the model of the computer, I don't know! I inherited it from my brother. It has on the front Diamond Data 36X on the cd front
"Expert" on the bottom and "Intel Inside Celeron". I'm sorry it's so vague. The computer is about 6 years old.On My Computer Properties, it says the computer is a Genuine Intel 64.0mb of ram. Thanks for your time and skill,
Barbara

More news!
I have got the back off the computer and am assuming that the green card that the monitor plugs into the back (sort of on the outside of the case of course!) of is the video card? It has a made in China sticker and a barcode sticker with the following numbers: 25009902010442 (and printed very very faint on the card itself is: 9848)
A little below that card is what I think must be the sound card as the speaker plugs are at the back of it and it has a barcode sticker with the numbers: 991D61504151
Directly below that card, almost attached to the one above it is another green card, I don't know what that one is, but it has a sticker with a tick on and the numbers N542 and another white sticker with the numbers 171480 with "void if removed" printed below the numbers. Right down the bottom of the computer case is one more green card with a sticker with a tick on it (another) and the number N195 on it.
I'm sorry its all so rough, I'm not sure how to explain it all. They are the only numbers and words I can find on the cards (apart from the made in China stickers and a few 1998 stickers).
Thanks in advance for any advice!!
Barbara ;-)

The Diamond data is the cdrom drive by the sounds of it.
you may have to turn it upside down and see if there is a model number, or anything that we can use to distinguish what make of PC it is.
try and download either:
belarc adviser

Aida32
www.webattack.com/get/aida32.shtmlthis should build a profile of your PC, so there may be details that we can use in here.

barb,
Everyone's correct in pointing you to the video card but you also have to have your monitor set to accept the proper colors.
If you want a quick generic fix, this has worked for me when i've been to busy (or lazy) to trace the right drivers down. Go to "Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager". First go to your "Display Adapter" and choose "Update Driver" to see if your system can find the proper driver. If not try it again but this time don't let it search, "Install from list" and choose the generic "SVGA 800x600" driver. Then do the same thing with your "monitor". Now you can go back to your "control panel" and choose "Display" and change to 800x600 and 16 bit (You cna choose 32 bit but i don't see any difference between the 2 and it's less work for your system at 16 bit. PS: Only do this if you know your video card and monitor can handle higher resolution or you could damage your monitor but since you know it could handle them before you'll be OK. If you want higher resolution you'll need to find the right drivers. Hope this helps! ;o)
ciao,
