Modem won't stay connected

I recently installed an updated driver for my modem (Presario 56K-DF). However, now when I try to log into my ISP, I'm disconnected almost immediately (within 1 or 2 seconds of connecting). I hooked up my laptop, which has a different modem but almost identical modem settings, and had no problems whatsoever. Is this a software glitch or is it possible that the modem itself is malfunctioning?
