Modem won't hang up.
On occasion the modem will not hang up, and thus permit incoming telephone calls. The little DUN connection will disappear, and a simple re-boot will not turn off the modem. Only a cut in power via the 120VAC switch will shut it up so that I can then use the telephone line in a normal manner. Even if the modem is still running, you cannot go internet nor use any other function. Most times a reboot or blinking out of the DUN will turn it off, but not always and it may continue to run for an additional hour or so.
How do I assure the modem turns off when it is no longer needed?

Go to Control Panel Networking. Install DUN and re-boot. Let Windows find the modem again and re-install DUN. That should solve the problem.
You will need the Windows 98 CD for this or the Windows from the CD.
Also make sure you have an up-to-date virus application and run a Virus scan. You could have a rouge dialler installed that has disabled automatic hangup.
One way to check if auto hangup on the modem is working is to run Hyper terminal. Type ATD and it should take the modem off-hook and you should hear a dial tone. Then type ATH and the modem should hang up. But that only checks the modem is working, it doesn't confirm that DUN is working properly.

Hi,
Have had two machines with that problem. Only way modem would hangup was to unplug the TELEPHONE CORD from the wall jack.
These were 56k USRobotics in older IBM P166 machines.
Tried the modems in different machine and they both had the same problem in the different machines.
I replaced the modems with newer version ISA modems and solved the problem.
Hopefully that will solve your problem.

If this is a recurrent problem, the modem or drivers could have problems. Unplug the modem cable AND turn off the computer for 5 minutes. That should reset it every time until the problem is solved. You can pick up the phone to see if you have a dial tone, so you know you can get those calls also.

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users
