can someone plz tell me what an acceptable connection speed and transfer rate is on a 56k int ernal modem. i appreciate that this is not going to be absolute, but an idea would be helpful as i think that my speeds are not as good as they perhaps should be
im connecting at 45333 and transfering data at approx 3.3kb/s at a ping of about 165 ms

your connection speed is great but i think you could get a little bit higher d/l speeds i can connect at 33333 and get 3.5 - 4 kb/s goto control panel/modems/click on you modem than properties than connection tab click on port settings and max out the buffers if this causes connection probs than set em back to original settings i did that my download speed increase by about 2 k a second which although a major part of your download speed depends on your ISP so dont be discouraged if that dont help

Your actuall DL speed will have much to do with line noise, proximity to telco central office, etc. Your connection speed has little to do with actual dl speed. (Just my experience.) If you get 3-4 K that's all I've ever seen.
