OS: Win 98
CPU/Ram: celeron/64mb
Comment:

I just inherited a computer (compaq presario 5BW220) that had XP installed. with the celeron and only 64 mb, it was slow as slow can be. it was originally installed with Me, and the previous owner had upgraded to XP. I have downgraded to Win98 because I know that it is a very stable OS. However, I am having problems with installing the modem, which is a PCtel hsp56 micromodem. It says that there is no modem on com1, which is where the modem is. is there something that i am doing wrong? and then, when it does notice the modem is there, it comes up as PCI card in the device manager. it finds the correct driver, it says that it cannot run modem.cpl to install the WDM Device. I am lost, and not sure where else to turn for this. help?
From what i am seeing, i cannot seem to find drivers for this modem (chipsetpct789t-c) for win98.

there should be a driver somewhere on the net for this modem. i'm guessing it's a dail-up modem, if so, try putting it in a different PCI slot. if you still have problems and you still want a dailup connection, modems are very cheap about £5/$8.50

The 789t drivers should be easy to find. I'll email you a zipped file containing the drivers I use whenever I get one of those modems. Unzip them to a folder that's easy to remember--like 'modem'.

Click on the 'pci card' in device manager, choose to reinstall the drivers. When it asks where to look for them, browse to the folder containing the unzipped files.

I've notice that setting modems up on a compaq always seems to be more difficult that doing it on a 'normal' computer. So your problem may not be the drivers.

Got to add/remove programs in control panel and remove any old modem stuff from there. Then try installing the drivers.

You said the modem is on com1. How do you know that if windows isn't loading the drivers for it?

I spent a full day on a similar problem like your having, then found an article in microsoft that said a lot of internal modems made around the 1998-2000 used the same chip to run the voice part of the modem that the cmi8330 sound card + various other brands used, which causes problems during modem detection.I removed the modem from system properties, turned the computer off, removed the sound card leaving the modem in,restarted the system and the modem setup perfectly first go.When I reinstalled the sound card after rebooting the computer the sound card had a problem.I changed brands of sound cards and from there on never had another problem. If nobody else comes up with the answer to your problem this maybe the thing to try as a last resort.
By the way iv'e used the PCtel 56k internal modems in a lot of units iv'e built and alway's found that the modem was set up as being on com port 4.I also have the latest drivers available for that modem which could be emailed to you if wish.Works on all but XP.

there is nothing in add remove programs for the modem.

before i formatted and removed win xp the modem was on com3.

might this have something to do with the PCI system management bus?

You might try a different slot. That sometimes helps with modems. I've never had problems with 789t modems but as I said above, compaqs and modems often don't work well together.

To remove the modem from system properties , the quickest/easiest way to do that is hold your left hand Alt key down & double-click on my computer icon on your desktop. You'll now see 4 tabs accross the top of the box that just opened. The second tab from the left says Device Manager , left click on that tab & click on the + sign on the left hand side of your modem. Now single click on the modem that drops down & click the remove tab third from the left on the bottom 4 buttons, It'l say are you sure , click yes then close all open boxes & shutdown the computer and follow the suggestion I listed above to rule out the sound card as being the conflict. It was through microsoft itself that I found this fix.

It would be great, KenOath, if the modem was even in the device manager.

I have tried ALL the slots. I played leap-frog with the modem and the NIC card. The NIC card was recognized in every slot. But not the modem.

If the modem's not being recognized even as a 'pci card' then you need a new modem.

And once it's seen as a 'pci card' the OS won't 're-see' it unless you remove it in device manager and hit 'refresh' or reboot.

Did the modem work for you when XP was on the computer or could it have been bad all along?

it worked fine with XP

part of the problem may be that the computer was designed for ME? and even on the compaq site, they only have support for this model in ME?

According to this page:

http://www.modem-help.co.uk/mfc/compaq_all.html

the SP file for the 98 modem drivers is SP16793.exe. Although on the compaq ftp site the associated txt file says those are the ME drivers.

There's a good chance the file will contain the 98 drivers or the ME drivers will work. You might want to give those a try if you haven't already.

It shouldn't matter that the computer origially had ME on it.

next question would be, is there a way to dual boot with me and 98? that eventually i could remove me? i really would prefer 98 on the system, it's a comp for the kids and they pretty much are only having games on it, and a lot of them are games for 98. plus i know that 98 is a lot more stable than me

You may be able to but I haven't setup any dual boot systems so I wouldn't advise you on how to do it. But ME and 98 would be 2 separate entities and you would still have to locate the 98 drivers. And I don't know that you could have a dual booting system when you've already installed ME. I think that needs to be set up before you install an OS.

If you want to experiment with installing 98 again you might try the drivers in SP16793.

I just solved the identical problem on a Compaq 5BW. Here's what I did. After getting the modem.cpl error several times, I shut off the machine, removed the PCTEL v90 that shipped with it and replaced it with an Intel modem. Then I booted to a win98 startup disk, ran fdisk, format and did a re-install of win98. I then loaded the Intel video chipset drivers followed by the modem drivers then sound drivers (ESS Allegro-1) and finally the network card drivers. I think the modem that shipped with the conputer (altho never stated) will not run in this machine running win98. If someone tries to install the drivers, it causes the modem.cpl fault. I also think that once that happens, you cannot load any modem. I am guessing that there is some damage or alteration of the modem wizard, and since I didn't want to spend time figuring out what actually happened, I just started over installing win98 with the PCTEL v90 sitting a safe distance from the machine. The machine runs like a champ now, modem and all.
Hope this helps!
