Hi Dennis, You may need to get an updated driver for your modem, since the upgrade to 98SE. Post back if you have anymore questions. Good Luck, ~winipcfg

You get an updated driver form the manufacturers home page. Do you know what brand of modem it is and the model #?? Use Google to search for their homepage and look for a support tab on the page. This is where you'll find the drivers. Download the file to a folder where you'll remember where it is like My Documents and run it.

Go to modems in control panel and do a diagnostic. Also check in device manager in system in control panel to see if it's properly configured.

The modem is a compaq but i couldn't find the model number so i just started typing the numbers that i saw and tried to look it up but i couldn't it. I was also messing around and went to modems and add new and i just picked different modems to install so now i don't know if i have the right modem installed and when i went to diagnostic it said that the modem failed to respond make sure that it is properly connected and turned on.

Compaq's seem to have all kinds of modem problems.
If you go to the compaq page for your model number it should have the drivers, assuming the modem originally came with the computer.
