CPU/Ram: 1.7/128

where do i start, everytime i boot my PC the phone line goes dead, when i try to connect to the internet my pc displays 4 to 5 messages stating codec problems and this is and that is missing etc, i have tried reinstalling the driver but no success, i am about to install a new modem as i suspect the current modem is knackered! im very confused, im back to college in two weeks and dont know where to start, any help most gratefully appreciated.

We need to see the exact messages you get? Is this an ADSL (cable) modem, or a dialup? Also, have you tried using the modem in a different slot? Slots can go bad too.

ill make a note of the messages etc and post back from work tomorrow, im using a 56K dialup modem, many thanks

Hi there

these are the messages i receive when trying to connect

1 Smart Link 56k voice modem

this driver is not compatible with the installed modem codec. contact your modem provider for support

2 MTLHAL

Hardware does not support modem

3 MTLSTRM

cannot load HAL driver

4 MTLMDM

cannot open stream manager

then an error '630' is shown saying that the modem is not working properly

i think that in my efforts to fix the problem i have messed up big time. i hope that this is not to serious

Did you go to the SmartLink makers' web site and check for any updated drivers? Or perhaps remove their driver and just use the generic one included in Windows? I also use dialup, and that's what I did with mine, runs perfectly well.
