I have windows 98se,ECS K7S5A MB with Athlon 1600XP onboard sound enabled,a Diamond Multimedia Supramax pci 56k modem. Modem is on Com 3 . Com1 and Com2 disabled in bios. When I connect a phone line to proper modem connection (line) and dial up ISP I can connect normally, but after I disconnect the phone line does not hang up. If I pick up the phone it is as if another phone in the house has not hung up and after a short time the recording "hang up and dial again" message is heard. The line will stay unreleased until I unplug the line to the modem. Even if the comp is shut down the line is still unreleased. This modem worked fine in other systems, any suggestions?

Howdy herb!

WOW! Something in Windows that doesn't hang up, That's novel! I couldn't resist :-)

You might try this...
When you right click the modem icon next to the time on the taskbar, do you see "Status and Disconnect"?
Which browser? If you have IE5, you can set it to disconnect after all internet actions are done (disconnecting from the net). That's in Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Settings/Advanced. Click the box that says Disconnect when no longer needed and it should shut the modem off like you want.
If you can't get it to work, hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and end task on Rnaapp which should kill the modem, might have to do it more than once.

Also, you might take a look at this article...

Please repost if you still have problems with it.

Hello,
To answer correctly your question, you have to know your problem could be occured from many reason, but the two main ones are:
1) you use to connect to internet via a provider as AOL for exemple, this provider since one year made a lot of changes in the program itself to protect it against "Trojans" attempts used by hackers to annoy users. This modifications introduced new protocoles as the NETBUI and IPX/SPX. Problem is that some computers upsolate don't match correctly with theses news protocoles and after no answer from the system hang off without reason...
2) Your Internet Explorer actually has a problem with some drivers dammaged or corrupted, by new installation of new programs you made in between, the result is that theses drivers are not well reconized by your IE and as the result, your modem connexion is bad. You can repair your IE by going to "Control Panel", open "add and remove programs" find line "Internet Explorer and his tools", open it, 3 options avalaible, one of them is "Repair", bookmark the repair option and send it, all your IE will scan for dammaged or corrupted files to restore original configuration, at the end you will be asked to reboot your system...
Good luck

check your device manager in safe-mode
see how many modem listings there are

check the modems drivers and inf file to make sure it's configured correctly.

when you turn off the system modems and network card store energy in them.
so they can be used to wake the system.

so if you to off the power supply or unplug for a while the modem will discharge.

Dear Kerry,

What exactly does "Rnaapp" stand for? - which comes up after hitting the three keys.

Somewhere and I can't quite locate it (maybe on another site) I replied to a related query about "Disconnect" not working.

I have noticed a couple of times in the last 24 hours or so that right-clicking the double-green monitors icon at the bottom right of my screen doesn't work and the programme obstinately won't go off.

This is odd. I don't want to engage the "Hang up immediately etc" option in "Tools/Options/Connections" in Outlook Express, but I will certainly try your suggested "Rnaapp" method next time this occurs, but I wonder why this is happening all of a sudden, - especially after me advising someone about possible things to do and now it's got me as well!

Dear Chris,

First thing is, please don't panic and don't destroy the machine!

I am sure with patience all will be cured.

I am only a beginner myself but have managed to survive various problems or at least perhaps found ways to avoid them in the future.

I think you should liaise with Herb and no doubt others will help when they see your request for help.

It might be helpful if you gave fuller details of what you are running for the e-mail programme. Is it Outlook Express? Which version? You may need to give details of your settings in "Dial Up Networking" "Dial Up Connection" and in other places (if you are using OE) such as "Tools/Options" so that it's easier for members of the Group to help you.

Dear Herb,

In case it may be of interest to you, there is a dedicated IE/OE Newsgroup where at least three top experts look in to help out.

The one I follow is for IE/OE Version 6 has the reference

microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress

and it is accessed via msnews.microsoft.com

There is a signing in process to do which someone had to show me how to do and if you need help here, the gentleman who helped me join up was "Noud" in Holland at the following e-mail address
roermund@kabelfoon.nl

I am sure he would assist you in joining up but hopefully you will be able to figure it out.

The three experts are Mr Tom C Koch, Mr Frank Saunders and Mr Jim Pickering.

They also all insist on receiving and answering through the newsgroup so that they can use their time to help many at once.
Mr Koch has won prizes for helping Microsoft users and he has his own Web Site in Amsterdam, mainly to do with Outlook Express saving and restoring e-mails etc.

Regards,

Victor

Howdy Victor Mishiku!

RNAAPP (Remote Network Access Application) is a core executable for Microsoft Windows Dial-Up Networking. RNAAPP can create a problem when trying to get Internet access by sometimes sticking in memory from a previous session, or too early in a dialup attempt, thus making your system believe that a connection is already established. The error messages "Dial-up Networking could not-establish a compatible set of network protocols…", "No dial tone", "Unable to Open Communications Port", "The Line is Busy…", "The Modem is Being Used…", and "Error 602: The Port is Already Open" are all common errors that you may receive with RNAAPP improperly loaded into memory.

To remove RNAAPP first press Ctrl-Alt-Del and end task this program. Reboot your computer. Make sure that no other programs such as fax software, supervoice, or other programs are using your modem. If there is nothing else using the modem, and you still cannot dialup at this point, make sure the modem is not using any init strings. If it is, try removing these and rebooting to make sure that this is not being caused by the string. Still having troubles? Perform the first step again, and reboot. When your computer comes up remove all dialers, .pwl files, network settings, and dialup networking. Reboot your computer and add back dialup networking, your network components, reboot again, and create your new dialer.

If the issue persists try uninstalling and reinstalling the modem, however make sure that you have the proper driver disks if it is not a PnP modem.

If you are using Windows 95 and you are experiencing the problem of your computer locking up while dialing. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del and check to see if RNAAPP is in the task list. If you end task RNAAPP and everything is ok then there is a procedure that might solve the problem for you. Download the ISDN Accelerator Pack 1.1 form Microsoft. You can install this even if you are running a modem. This Pack updates the many components of Dial-up Networking, including RNAAPP. It is even further recommended that you upgrade Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking to version 1.3 and the winsock2 upgrade.

If you continue to have problems, try extracting rnaapp.exe from your cab files after uninstalling and reinstalling Dial-Up Networking and all it's associated components. Here is how you can do this in Windows 95 and 98:

Windows 95
1) Open up a dos prompt by going to Start, Programs, MS DOS Prompt.
2) Type cd windows\system
3) Type extract /a d:\win95\win95_16.cab rnaapp.exe
4) When Prompted to overwrite the file, click "YES".

Windows 98
1) Open up a dos prompt by going to Start, Programs, MS DOS Prompt.
2) Type cd windows\system
3) Type extract /a d:\win98\win98_42.cab rnaapp.exe
4) When Prompted to overwrite the file, click "YES".

If this is still occurring there are 4 routes that you can take at this point.

1) Search for RNAAPP in the registry. Remove any instances. WARNING: This should not be done by the user, this fix should be done by a computer tech. If you are an ISP tech or a user you should probably not try this step.
2) Uninstall and reinstall Dial-Up Networking "The Microsoft Way" by renaming files and extracting from cabs. WARNING: This step can take a long time.
3) Have the modem tested. This could be occurring due to a bad modem.
4) Reformat the computer after Dial-Up Networking has been fully reinstalled at least 5 times (It sometimes takes multiple reinstalls of Dial-Up Networking to resolve this).

Hope this helps!

Dear Kerry,

Thank you for your magnificent response, - I hope this will be useful to lots of members in the Group.

I am very grateful for all your kind help but at present, a lot of it, I am afraid Kerry, is a bit "over my head". I am not having too many troubles dialling up, - it's just that I noticed that once or twice my "Disconnect" (little green monitors symbol) seemed to refuse to work.

When you mentioned the "Rnaapp" in your earlier response to Herb (No.1) on 24/6/02, I just wondered what it was. Anyway, when it stalls again, I will see what happens when I turn off (if it responds) the "Rnaapp" after hitting the three prescribed keys.

Thanks again Kerry.

BTW, there is an article in this month's "PC PRO" Issue 94 August 2002 about the "Silent PC" - "Signum Data's liquid-cooled PC makes a splash" It's rather pricey £1,734 incl Vat(Value Added Tax) and looks to have limited space for extra Drives. No fans in it at all though! Yokese ("High Temperatures" 25/6/02 Posting) might be interested in this technique but give it some time and the prices will come down no doubt.

Regards and thanks again.

Victor
