I have an internal V.90 K56Flex HSP PCI Modem running on Win98. It is currently on COM4. I want to use a program that only recognises modems installed on COM1 or COM2. As the modem is PCI I cannot change the port settings to COM1 or COM2, is there any way to do this?

James,
A little more info please. Is your modem P&P, or do you have dips or jumpers to assign the com ports? If you have a manual on it, it should explain. If it is P&P, you should be able to reassign the com ports in device manager. Unless you have an unusual system though, don't try com1. It is usually reserved for a mouse, and assigning another device to that port would mess up the mouse if it is on com1. Modems can be a headache to reassign, but you should be able to do it ok with a little research. I hope this helps a little. Bob

Some of the PCI Modems do freaky things at boot up. Some dynamically choose the first valid available COM Port it finds at boot up, others only during installation. The latter can USUALLY be changed in the device manager, the other requires a little trickery. This will usually do the trick regardless:
If you don't use COM2 for anything, disable it in the BIOS. Then windows will not install any drivers for it. Uninstall the modem, then reboot. When the modem gets re-installed, it should take COM2 automatically. If it takes COM3, you may have to disable COM1 in the BIOS instead, and move any COM1 device to COM2.
If you go this route, make sure you read the documentation on uninstalling the modem. Some brands require you to also delete the .inf file and drivers from your drive--otherwise you will get virtual modem "copies" listed in the Device Manager (Aztech chipsets are famous for this).
Good Luck!

The modem is P&P, but cannot be reassigned in the device manager. I have disabled COM2 in the BIOS and re-installed the modem, but it still takes COM4. COM1 and COM2 have no devices installed on them and the modem resources cannot be manually configured from system properties.
Thanks for all your responses!
