I have a conextant (Rockwell) 56K modem installed on a PC running Win98 (First Edition) The modem dials out and I can hear it communicating with my ISP's server but does not reach the point of verifying username and password, its says 'No Answer' and does not connect. My dial up networking settings are OK and telephone line is fine after testing with another PC. The modem has also tested fine. The only thing I can think of is when I added dial up networking from add/remove in control panel I rushed and it locked up causing me to end task. Could this have corrupted some registry files or something. If so, will removing dial up networking and then re adding it after a re-boot fix the error? If not do I have to remove some registry settings? The modem is dialling out fine but appear to be having problems recieving data that the modem sends to my ISP's server. I have had the modem working fine using the same procedure on another PC. Any ideas???

failure to get an answer after dialling but before verifying password suggests that your modem's ovation string may be wrong. check driver installation (reinstall), and/or check with modem manufacturer. occasionally, trying to connect too fast can cause this - you can test by setting the baud rate lower. it can't hurt.

Dave,
I was just wondering, did your modem connect you to a friends phone number using Hyperterminal? Also, while searching for an answer to your problem, I came across this MS article on how to remove and reinstall DUN and TCP/IP files when there are symptoms like yours. I don't understand why the proceedure is so long, but maybe it makes sense to you.

Please let me know what fixes the problem.
