OS: Win 98
CPU/Ram: 1.0G Athlon/386M Ram
Comment:

I have installed a new motherboard (MSI 6330) from an old 450MHz Intel motherboard.

Transferred all the goodies to the motherboard....got it all configured and the modem that used to work before with no problem won't install itself again.

- I've pulled the modem out of Device Manager and Add/Remove Programs and it will detect (PC Communications device) but won't find the drivers....even the driver's that came with the modem.
- I took the modem and put it in a different machine and it took and worked fine. Put it back in the suspect machine, and no install.
- Put a diffrent modem (Diamond SupraMax) in suspect machine and worked fine. Put back in the US Robotics...no go.

Any thoughts???

Also, I'm having similar problems getting sound back (Drivers did install, but no sound, different speakers tried..still no sound).

Is the USR modem one of those where you're supposed to install the drivers before you put the modem in the computer? Sometimes that doesn't work all that well.

Anyway, the OS is searching for an .inf file on the installation disk for the modem. When it detects the modem, browse through the disk until you find it. Then have it look in that specific location for the drivers.

I will try a hand but, first some clarifications.

1. Which one of the following 3 Micro Start International 6330 series Motherboards is installed in your Pc?

MS-6330 Lite 6330Lite v1.0A.
MS-6330 K7T Turbo2 6330 v5.0.
MS-6330 K7T Turbo Limited Edition 6330 v30A.

2.
"Transferred all the goodies to the motherboard....got it all configured and the modem that used to work before with no problem won't install itself again".
Did you uninstall the Modem Software before before you removed the modem and hard drive from the old motherboard?

3. What model is the US Robotics Modem that was originally in that old Mob that you have transferred to the new MSI 6330 Mob?

Ok, the particulars...

Question 1: The board is a 6330 Turbo2 v5.0

Question 2: The software was never uninstalled. When the modem was put in the new motherboard and powered up, Windows tried detecting and reinstalling the drivers.

Question 2: The US Robotics (win)modem is Model 0766, Part# 663565-00, FCC ID: 42xusa-35411-so forth and so forth....should show up as "US ROBOTICS 56K WIN INT" in device manager.

To make correct identification of USR Modems you might use Modem Identification Wizard.

In the mean time. try the following:

1. Uninstall ALL modem drivers through Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs

2. Make Sure Device Manager has No Modems by selecting and clicking the Remove button if necessary.

3. Shut down the PC, Power Off , remove all External cables and with Antistatic method Uninstall the PCI Modem and place it in an Antistatic bag.

4. Make sure all internal cables are securely and properly inserted and all Add-on cards are secure in their slots and then Recable, Power ON and Restart the PC.
5. Press Del key to enter BIOS Setup
You may see a window similar to this:

8. Disable the Onboard Serial Port 2 Auto

9. Save Changes and Exit the BIOS setup.

10. On Startup, hopefully Windows DOES NOT detect a Serial Device (or PCI communication Device) and the Device Manager has No + Modems.
11. Shut Down and Install the Moden in the PCI slot preferably a different one than the one you have tried before.

12. Restart.

13. Windows detects the New PCI serial Device.

14. Install the Drivers using the Diskette or CD and don't let Windows install its own driver .

15. Go to Device Manager and verify that +Modems is showning your USR Modem without any error symbols.

16. Using Control Panel >Modems> General > Your modem > Diagnostics tab> Modem Port> >Modem More Info... test the Modem to be OK.
17. Install DUN for your ISP .
18 Dial and see if it connects to your ISP

Post your results. If there are problems pl post with details.

Ok, I just went through the instructions above and no go.
- I even went in and removed the .inf files for it and rebooted. Detects, but won't install.

Now, here's something real interesting. I just took a spare HD I had laying around. Reformatted and put a clean install of Win98SE. Guess what, still the same problem....hmmmm.

I tried Disabling the onboard sound to see if I could get the modem to install (conflict?)....but no install. Likewise, the other way around and again...no sound. (Sound installs and says ok, but no sound).

Any suggestions???

1. Did you identify the Modem correctly using the USRobotics Modem Wizard?
With the the information provided in your post I could not identify it correctly.

2. In your original post you mentioned that the Modem when installed in a different Computer, it "worked".[ By that I assume it dialed and connected to your ISP] Did you use the same Driver disk in that case as the one you are trying to use now?

3. From the information provided so far, I can only reach one conclusion , the disk does not have the driver for the device or the installation method has some problem.
4. Assuming that the disk does have the correct drivers, when "Windows detects a new Communication device" and prompts you to install the driver, click cancel. The Device Manager would show Other device: PCI serial device or communication device with an error symbol
5. Install the Device driver using the CD or Floppy it came and then Restart the machine to see if the Modem is correctly installed.

If it still fails, Download and launch the Modem Identification Wizard.

Sound problem requires a separate detailed look after this one is solved.

You sound like you know what you're doing especially since you installed the Supra Max in the computer and USR in another. But still all you say is it doesn't install. What does that mean? After the OS detects the modem:

Does the OS not find any drivers on the disk?
Does the OS find drivers but say they're not the correct ones?
Does it find the correct drivers but doesn't install them?
Does it install them but the modem doesn't work?

I assume you've tried the modem in different slots.

Some modems are incompatible with some systems. I've had that problem with Zoom modems in just about every system and one of the supra models wouldn't work in a dell.

First, I got the Modem Identification Software and it did NOT detect the modem! Hmmm? I did try a different PCI slot (You never know). Still wouldn't detect.

Second, I installed the US Robotics (from Win98SE) to my Win XP machine and XP used it's drivers to install. The modem did dial out and connected (albeit at a lower bps than usual).

Third, The OS detects there is a modem, but can't seem to find the drivers. Even though I am staring at the disk that came with it.

My next trick would be to get a new (other that crappy Win) modem and another sound card and try that.

I doesn't make sense that these devices are having this much difficulty, even when I try 'em on a fresh HD. At first I thought there was a bus problem with the PCI slots, but the video card isn't bothered by it and I've installed the VIA drivers for the bus/motherboard.

In twenty odd years haven't run into this!

Believe it or not Dialup Modems are the weakest links in the computer hardware! Next comes Sound card as a close second! These two are hard to setup and most trouble-prone in their performance once you think you got them installed!

It's the one where the OS can't find the drivers that's the oddest. Have you tried browsing through the disk? You may have to have it 'show all hardware' and then 'have disk'. The drivers are there, it's just a matter of leading the OS to their location.

If you can't get it sorted out just put a different modem in it. There's nothing special about USR modems. At one time they were the best but either the competition has caught up with them or they sat on their laurels. I only put a USR modem in a computer if I can't find anything else on sale.

Ugghhh, problem resolved.
I almost hate to post my stupidity, but...

Apparently these symptoms occurred with the existing HD and a clean HD. Leads me to believe it's a hardware problem and confirmed when I put in new devices (Modem & Sound Card I got today) and did the same thing!

Well, guess what....it seems that when I put the board in the case, one of the grounding fins in the connector opening grounded the board preventing me from installing the devices.

Pulled the board out and re-straightened the fins and everything came back.

Geesh, I feel like a dork somedays.

Thank's anyway for your help guys!!!

Charles,

Thank you for posting the final chapter to the modem mystery. Your post added a new cause in the list of Modem/sound card problems. I couldn't quite understand the exact mechanism that resulted in the selective malfunction of just these two devices without a more generalized problem! Well, I guess, the modem and sound card problems might have been a prelude to more ominous things to follow and your persistent pursuit, detection, and timely intervention must serve not only remedial but prophylactic purpose also. Does this prove the old adage, the best diagnostic test for a problem is often a second better look at what one has done in the first place?
