Hi all, I have a problem with the following PC I;m trying to diagnose for someone:
- 400MHz Intel, 64M Ram, CD, Win 98SE, NIC card, Creative Labs 56K Modem.

It seems when dialing into the ISP, the modem will: Dial, Negotiate, Handshake, Check Password, and Connect fine. But, whenever you attempt to access a web page, I get a DNS error page (The icons in the tray don't even blink when I hit enter....like it's not even attempting to go to a DNS server.)

Here's what I've done/diagnosed so far....

- Every protocol imaginable was loaded. All removed except TCP/IP and NetBeui.
- Removed DUN and reinstalled.
- Removed modem and reinstalled.
- Removed NIC card and reinstalled.
- Checked Network icon in Control Panel (Setup on Windows Logon, TCP/IP -> Dial Up Adapter removed and reinstalled).
All result in same....no web page.

I performed the following:
- Ping www.ispname.com: Resulted in "Unable to resolve host name.
- Ping 216.238.0.10(ISP address): Result - worked fine and sucessfully ping-ed.
- Tracert www.ispname.com: Resulted in unable to to resolve host name.
- Tracert 216.238.0.11 worked fine

However (This is the weird part), in IE 5.5 I tried www.google.com....nothing.
I then tried http://216.239.33.100/ (This should bring up Google by it's address)...still nothing (Yet, I could ping it)?
I've checked to make sure that there's no proxy server set up on this thing.

I even put my own ISP configuration on this PC with the same results.
I put the PC in question's ISP configuration on my machine and I can log in using their logon.

I'm confused...can anybody offer any suggestions?

Try this--
Go to regedit
Hkey_local_machine
System
Services

Delete winsock2 folder

If asked to restart, say no

Uninstall dialup

Restart

Reinstall dialup

See if it works now

Post back with results...

Look in add/remove programs for a program called newdotnet. Uninstall it. Reboot.

Well, found out what the problem was.
Thanks dc, that took care of it.
Can see everything now.

I knew I'd eventually find someone who knew what this thing was doing! ;)

Again, thanks.
