This error says the following:
"All wave devices that can play files in this format are in use. Try again when a wave device is free"
My cd player works fine, .rmi files play fine. Any time I try to play a .wav file or try to play a video file from the internet, I get this error or another error saying that Mediaplayer, Vivo Player, Quicktime, etc..(whatever player the file is using) cannot play audio stream because there is no audio hardware available or the audio hardware is not responding.
I've tried everything the Windows '98 troubleshooters have told me; checking properties, preferred devices, volume controls, codecs, Device Manager, etc..;
I think I have narrowed it down to a file or application in IE that is using my wave devices. When I open Volume Controls, I notice that by the WAVE volume control bar there is a meter(led) that shows if the wave devices are being used. It normally would fluctuate up and down (like a radio equalizer display) but instead it is stuck with three bars and doesn't move. When I first turn my computer on and go into IE the meter is clear, but when I click a different website other than the default the wave meter sticks with 3 bars again.
I wasn't having this problem until a couple of weeks ago. I think it might have started after I downloaded the RealPlayer GX2. I have since uninstalled it. I have also uninstalled my audio driver and reinstalled it.(SoundBlaster AWE64)
The only other thing I can think to do is uninstall and reinstall everything.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have the exact same problem. I have physically removed my Soundblaster AWE 64 card, deleted drivers and reinstalled, but to no avail. Please let me know if you figure it out.

To resolve this problem, look in Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs for any Intel video camera software. Remove it and reboot. If you cannot find this type of software anywhere in there, go to device manager and under the properties for the Intel Virtual Audio Device in Sound Video Game Ctrlrs, choose Disable in this Hardware profile. Click OK and reboot. If this fails to solve the problem reinstall the sound drivers afterwards. You should be taken care of at this point.

I am trying to follow your directions to fix error mmsystem320 on my computer. But under my sound video game ctrlrs, the only options I get are ES1869 control interface and ES1869 Plug and Play Audio Drive. Am I supposed to disable one of these? There is no "Intel Virtual Audio Device" in my Sound Video Game cntrollers. Can you help?..thanks

I have the same problem, but it alternates between mmsystem004 and mmsysten320.
I've tried almost everything. Installing, removing soundrecorder.
I read somewhere that the problem may be a corrupt wav file from the sound theme. Changing the theme worked for some (not for me)BTW
its a Soundblaster AWE64

My parents are having the same problem in Windows 98. I will have them try the advice posted, but does anyone else have any other advice? Microsoft hasn't been much help.
Thanks!

Guess what. Me too.
What hardware and software are we all using?
I'm using win98 with a pnp ISA AWE64 card. I'd be surprised if everyone else was using the same thing, so it must be a software issue. I've had problems with RealPlayer in the past. Does anyone know of any software that shows you which processes are using which pieces of hardware & drivers?

I had this very problem with a PCI64 on a fresh installation of W98, and tried everything suggested here (and more) to no avail.
Then, finally, I checked out the PnP/PCI settings in the BIOS, and for the entry "PnP OS installed", changed YES to NO. Everything is now hunky-dory.
Hope this helps someone else -- it seems to be quite a common problem, I've seen a lot of cries for help on this one, and very few answers.
Barry

WTG Barry, changing the Plug 'n Play settings took care of the mmsystem320 and 296 errors and a bunch of other problems.
Thanks man!
Peter

same here - it just started happening a couple days ago -
we switched to a cable moden
could it be that ?

I am now having the same error. I have tried all of the above suggestions, without success. The common note is that there appears to be a device conflict "somewhere".
When the Plug and Play OS settings are changed, should the sound card be reinstalled?
This message string has been going on since June, 1999. It is unfortunate that few write back saying if/how their systems were repaired.

I have tried all of the above suggestions,
without success. I have removed all of the
programs that utilise media files.reinstaled
windows 98 checked PnP/OS already set to No.
and the fault still persists
some relief after defraging but fault soon
returns.
please more help!

I have (finally) some limited success. After stepping through the Windows device troubleshooting proceedure (go to Help on the task bar, search for Device/troubleshooting, resolving conflicts) I eliminated conflicting devices by removing the ones I did not think I needed. I then got stuck when asked to move the IRP locations, so I removed my sound card, rebooted the machine, turned my machine off and then reinstalled my sound card. PnP OS was on. Since I did two proceedures,I am not sure which one actually worked!
Now my trouble is that some Wav files work and others do not. "Basic" ones like Chime and Ding from Windows work. "Complicated" ones like machine noises from some games do not. The files cannot be corrupted since it happens to numerous files on original disks.
Any ideas?

Back to normal.... I downloaded a new set of drivers from Creative.com, deleted the device from my system and re-installed the device using the updated drivers - I now have sound!
Hope this helps any others with the same problem.
