i have a similar problem. i think i've narrowed it down to be cause by something that was installed with dreamworks' Trespasser. i only have a problem with AVI's with audio. the sound is ok. but the video is messed up. and after being on hold for an hour (long distance) all they told me was to get the latest drivers for my sound card. Every thing is up to date. there are no hard ware conflicts, i've tried robin's avi.reg fix. and i'm still having the same problem.
i've tried about everything i can think of. help!!!!!

this error occurs because your AVI player is incorrectly registered. In my case I let QuickTime take over AVI's and then Age of Empire II AVI's would no play correctly. See the following link for the fix. I recommend removing the AVI entry from FILE->OPTIONS menu (windows explorer) and then double clicking on an AVI file, select MediaPlayer as the default player then apply the registry entries that are on the folloing web page...

This solved my problem. I hope it helps.
