I have a system here where i work, and when attempting to get into Windows, it brings up the error "mmsound.drv cannot be loaded" and the system quickly goes to the shutdown screen.
Here are a few things i tried:I tried remming the line out in the system.ini. It then brings a fatal exception OE upon beggining of windows.
Is there any known way around this without wiping the drive??
Either send me an email or post on here please. thanks.

I have been cruising the net, because I am having this exact same problem, and it occurs when I try to upgrade my graphics accelerator board. It IS related to the sound board and driver, but only in a round about way, perhaps due to the DirectX driver that that new video card uses to access the sound. I also have been able to get the graphics board installed and working, if I made a completely clean install of Windows (onto an emply partition). So it is definitely a software config problem.
I have been just suggested to remove the sound card, then the sound driver, then install the graphics board, and then (iffn when thats working) reinstall the sound card.
Alternately I am also going to try to get the latest drivers for that board, as the one I am using is at least 2 years old.Just use a search engine with the keyword "mmsound.drv", and you get some more hints on this problem. It seems fairly common when trying to upgrade video drivers.

I am a computer tech and i see this problem AT least once a week. It is actually the video card and not the sound, i dont know what causes this, i do know some fixes for it. First boot in DOS mode and try doing a scanreg/restore, if this doesnt work boot in safe mode and run sysedit. Then in system.ini rem out the video drivers(Chance are you have a Diamond S3, right?) and below it enter display=vga.drv. However if you can its best just to go to device manager and change your display to standard vga if it'll let you. Reboot your computer and reinstall your video drivers if you have to.
This takes care of mmsound.drv 9 out of 10 times. that other 1 time I resort to formatting the system. Good luck!
