Alright, I got my Compaq P100 laptop to recognize the external floppy drive, but now it won't boot up in Windows and says it's missing win.com file. HELP!

I tried to go into C:/windows to find the missing win.com file, but it says bad command or file name when I typed it in. Do I need to go into the windows directory?

type
dir c:\windows | more
That will display what is in the folder and stop when each page fills. Hit Return to see the next page.
The character between c:\windows and more is on the key with a backslash (upper case) on my keyboard.

hey, jill, if you have you're still having probs with win.com and you have your win95 floppies or cd-rom (i assume that you have floppies, because of your earlier messages), then you can get a new win.com file quite easily. you can extract a new win.com from your cab files on those floppies. extract win.cnf from the cab files, then rename it win.com. to do so, from a ms-dos prompt, put disk 3 (according to microsoft) in the a:\ drive, then type;
extract a:\win95_03.cab win.cnf /l c:\windows
(if windows is your boot directory.) then rename win.cnf to win.com. you will do this by typing:
ren c:\windows\win.cnf c:\windows\win.com.
this will make a new win.com file for your computer. if the win.cnf file is not in cab03, then try cab04, replacing 03 with 04 in the extract command. (in my disks win.cnf is in cab04.) if this doesn't work, or you have additional problems, post a new message with your problems, and i will help you with more tips.

jill, just anote about my previous post.
it looks like it may be confussing, because of the it was posted.
extract a:\win95_03.cab win.cnf /l c:\windows is one line with a space between /l and c:\windows.
also, ren c:\windows\win.cnf c:\windows\win.com is one line with a space between c:\windows\win.cnf and c:\windows\win.com. hit enter after each command. good luck.
