To restore win.com, extract the win.cnf file to C:\WINDOWS from the original floppy or cd used to set up windows.

NOTE: The Win.cnf file is in the following locations:

Disk 3 of the original Windows 95 disks

Win95_03.cab of the original Windows 95 CD-ROM

Win98_28.cab of the original Windows 98 CD-ROM

Win98_25.cab of the original Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM

Rename the Win.cnf file in the Windows folder to Win.com. To do so, type the following line, and then press ENTER:

ren c:\windows\win.cnf c:\windows\win.com

Restart your computer.

Well, if you're posting here you must be on a running machine. Follow the instructions and copy the "new" win.com to a floppy. Boot the problem system with a boot disk. Once it's booted put in the floppy with win.com on it and copy the file from the A; drive to c:\windows.

copy/v a:\win.com c:\windows

www.Bootdisk.com has Win 95 boot disks with cdrom support available for download. Just download the file, put a floppy in the A: drive, click on the downloaded file, and it will create a boot disk for you on your floppy.

Dan Penny in reply #1 gave great information to recover a copy of win.com. Assuming you have the cd-rom version of win95 and you boot with a floppy with cd-rom drivers and you note the cd-rom drive letter (insert the cdrom):
To extract win.com from the cd to the windows folder: Key this in at the A:\> prompt (replace R: with your cdrom drive letter):

R:\win95\extract /L C:\windows R:\win95\win95_03.cab win.cnf

#########################################

Rename the file as in reply #1.
