Comment: With reference to a thread from June 2006 my problem is exactly the same...even down to the fact that he had just downloaded 4 critical updates and updated Media player...That is what I had just done minutes before i rebooted as they requested and then lost my win.com file Is it possible to get the file in any other way? My second pc is 2000 and I dont have any access to a win 98 cd. If I get the file I could follow the directions on the old thread. (BTW...this pc has no right click enabled is that simple to fix?) Thanks in anticipation of some help..or even just reading this..lol

Reply: (edit)Lizy I could email you that file but your email isn't part of your personal info. Don't post it out in the open. go to your profile and enter it there.

Reply: (edit)Ohh Darn! I thank you so much for sending it but Hotmail has permanently blocked it because it is a .com file. They suggest changing it to a txt file..Will that work? Would I just change it back? Other wise I have an unused 'provider' account I may be able to access. (I really appreciate your effort)

Reply: (edit)I can change the file extension to txt. You will need to change it back. If necessary I could zip it. I'll try a different extension first.

Reply: (edit)Tried everything...removing dust...cleaning floppy..Add remove hardware..checked drivers..Followed troubleshooting help menu..Checked sharing...etc Nothing.. Tried reformatting..kept asking me to insert disk.. I knew something was wrong...The light wasn't coming on..
There was, I realised..a very good reason...I had put the floppy disk in the wrong PC! (2 pc's side by side but the second monitor is on top of the original hard drive!..lol) Of course ...had the troubleshooting guide suggested you check to see if you are inserting in the correct floppy drive none of this may have happened! lol Never mind the fact that I then found the other PC had what seemed like a similar issue...It kept saying please insert disk... This time after pushing the button as it appeared stuck...and rebooting...it came to my attention I hadnt put a disk in...
Hmmmm...lol I really am (usually) quite intelligent.... Will keep you informed...lol

Reply: (edit)I have tried to type in commands in DOS under the C:\ command prompt. I tried copyv/ a:\win.com c:\windows\win.com Maybe not exactly like that (I only have one monitor so I cant refer back) but close...nothing... I typed copy/v a:\win.com and it said 1 file copied. Rebooted...it got to the point where last time it told me the win.com file was missing and then said please wait...i waited...and waited...went to do something and when i got back the computer had shut down. What could I try next?

Reply: (edit)Strictly I've left these forums but as nobody seems around do this: With the floppy containing win.com in the drive type this from either the A Prompt or the C prompt:- copy a:\win.com c:\windows then hit Return key. Make sure the command is "exactly" as written (one space after copy, another after win.com and backslashes not forward slashes). It will either say "1 file copied" or (if win.com is already present) it will ask if you wish to overwrite it - in which case hit y for "yes" followed by the Return key. Commands must be exactly right in DOS and I doubt what you originally typed was quite what you were advised. DerekW

Reply: (edit)Really appreciate your help here...Allof you! I'm having trouble getting into DOS command prompt..I managed it once and copied and checked exactly what you had stated...spaces and all... It just told me one file copied...i tried the 'y' nothing everything else was bad command. Rebooted several times...tried F8 F5...nothig happens...did it with disk in and disk out. I get...Compaq graphic then a WINDOWSscreen shows.....then AVG bootup loading...then this screen... _ C:\>C:PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE~1\BOOTUP.EXE [System Mechanic] Compacting registry Please wait...... That was the point it originally tol me that my win.com file was missing... nothing (esc...y...F keys) seems to change the course of it...to command prompt. Just makes that ding noise after a bit. Above the sequence I mentioned there is an undersccore with a flashing thick dot above it. Baffled...

Reply: (edit)Lizzy Many times when an installation goes south you will get a message that some file is missing and after you replace it another and another message will appear. I sounds like the Win.com file was copied. Post a link to the june post you are referring to.

Reply: (edit)I still have not managed to fix it... Everything gets ready to start...The win.com file seems to be there..(the correct size) but just before Windows appears the dot with a flashing cursor under it appears in the top left about three letters in.. Nothing moves after that. Have been trying to get hold of a Win98 se disk but no luck.. I'm watching all your other posts for inspiration...
