OS: Windows 98SE
CPU/Ram: Pentium(r)lll
Product: Gateway 450
Comment:

I had to reformat my hard drive due to viruses. After reloading win98 and when booting up, I get a message that the following device files cannot be found. 1.vnetsup.vxd 2.vnetbios.vxd 3.vredir.vxd 4. dfs.vxd and finally "unable to load the dll msnp32.dll. I am also networked with another PC and my ethernet driver won't load. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?
Thanks

try google search for simular errors,

appears to be files required for networking,

either uninstall or reinstall networking files,

try regedit search for files in registry and remove,

or repair from control panels networking

Hi Buttercup, street1, bofra, hello everyone,

Go to Control Panel and Network.

Select Client for Microsoft Network and then select Remove.

Restart the Computer.

Install Client for Microsoft Network.

You should no longer receive the messages.

Mesich,
I followed your instructions but was not successful. When I removed Microsoft Network and clicked OK I was asked to insert the Windows 98 CD. When I clicked OK to the CD I recived a message "secur32.dll cannot be found". I clicked skip the file and I proceeded to get 5 more messages of missing files on the Windows 98 CD. It finally let me restart and when it booted up two of the original error messages were gone vredir.vxd & msnp32.dll.
When I added micosoft Network back I was again asked to insert my 98 CD to restart. This time I recieved at least 12 more messages of files that could not be found on the Windows 98 CD.
Should I go through the process of reloading my Windows 98?
Also, when I originally bought the computer I had a Windows 98 CD not a second edition. However, I borrowed a friends CD to reinsatll my OS because I thought mine was no good. The one I borrowed was a second edition. Could that be the problem? I have the original CD if I need to use it.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Buttercup

Hi Buttercup,

Do I understand correctly you used the same CD, Win98SE, for removing and installing Client for Microsoft network as you used to install Windows last time?

You are having so much trouble and it's really still so early in this incarnation of 98 I would start all over with a Format of C drive and then copy the CD's Win98 folder files to the hard drive and install Windows from the hard drive. Installing from the hard drive is some 15 minutes faster and results are almost always rock solid unlike your current installation. 98se is the better choice in my opinion.

Hello everyone,

I agree with Lee in formatting the drive and install Win98SE from the hard drive.

I believe the CD is starting to head south.

Let us know if you have any problems.

Lee and Mesich,

I did as you suggested. The installation went well, I have no more errors and I have been able to re-establish my network with another computer.

Thanks for your help.
