Did you have McAfee antivirus and then uninstalled it? If so, reinstall McAfee, copy vshinit.vxd to another location, remove McAfee and then put the vshinit.vxd back in.
If you didn't have McAfee, vshinit.vxd is located on the Plus98.cab File on the Win98 Plus pack cd.

no offence but you need to use a good uninstaller. most things offer the option of removing shared files as in...'the following file is no longer used etc etc'
just say no as they speak with forked tongue sometimes.

Wow, this just happened to me, too! Some guy at McAfee sent me some pages out of a manual about how to delete a bunch of stuff & it screwed me up in a different way. I got there by trying to update McAfee through the VirusScan Central thing, & hadn't upgraded because they didn't send me a ID# and password, so it took an update I wasn't built for & whacked out the VirusScan, jamming up my computer. Then I do what this guy says (couldn't tell me over the phone & lead me thru), then try to install the 5.01 and CAN'T! I'm going to get the disk now & see if I can install everything from there. :(

McAfee ought to be SHOT!!!!

I too tried to uninstall their Virus Scan & Guardog, and lost several shared files (fbwin95.vxd & others to numberous to list), even though when Win98 asked me if I wanted to save them & I did! So guess it goes to show i'll never use another McAfee product again. LuLu goes off to reformat her hardrive the old fasioned way... ~sighs

I upgraded to Mcafee v-0501. What a mistake. Made my puter run at a turtles pace so I uninstalled it. Bang, missing "fbwin95.vxd".
Re-installing only slowed me down again. Unintalled again. Bang, missing "fbwin95.vxd"
To sucessfully resolve, with the help of another party, I deleted the following from Regedit:
1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Mcafee\Safe&Sound\Files
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\current control set\services\VXD\FBWin95
3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Helix Software\Safe && Sound
Of course I only delete the highlighted folder or item found in the last item in each string above after exporting the entry to another folder for safe keeping.
I then re-installed version 4.3 and am happy again.
Note: walking in the registry is not for the faint hearted.

I'd like to shoot Mcafee too. The upgrade they recommended rendered my machine useless. After 3 hours of sweating, the machine works but still gives me a nasty warning on bootup about fbwin95.vxd

Bryan,
Thanks a lot for your advise on August 26. The regedit did solve my problem. Yes, I am not going to buy another Macafee product. Also slowed down my Outlook express when I uninstalled this stupid product. Then I had to extract a file from Windows CD to correct that. The reason I had decided to remove Macafee is due to it blocking the disk defragmentation. This idiotic software keeps on writing, and does not allow the defragmentation to complete. After I installed Norton, every thing seemed good, other than the nasty fbwin95.vxd message. Bryan, thanks again.

Any help very welcome. I have uninstalled version 5.12 of McAfee (b---tards), yes I had lots and lots of problems with it. And I have followed the Registry advice of Bryan. I am just about clean, but my defrag doesn't work unless I close everything down apart from explorer and systray, but more importantly I have a McAfee system folder (Safe & Sound) which I just can't get rid of........any suggestions very welcome

Graham,
I had the same problem with the safe & sound system folder. After a lot of searching I found http://members.aol.com/axcel216/newtip19.htm#RSF. Go to Regedit as Bryan suggested and then to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\explorer\My Computer\Name Space. There will be a few long strings of numbers representing system folders such as dial-up networking, scheduled tasks and web folders. Make sure you only delete the one corresponding to safe & sound. (it should say safe & sound under the data column on the right when you click on it).
Note: Scheduled tasks begins with BDEADF00-C265... Dial-up Networking begins with 992CFFA0-F557... and Web Folders begins with D6277990-4C6A...I don't know the # for S&S cause I deleted it before copying it down. This worked for me.
Thanks for your help too Bryan!
