I am attempting a clean install and run into the above mentioned error, "vmm32.vxd missing". I am unable to complete the install. I have read numerous amounts of the posts concerning this problem and I am concerned and confused. What must I do to continue and complete this install. Please help and thank you.

Doesn't seem to be a simple remedy for that error, or so it seems.
Typically it goes missing after an installation, best remedy then is to attempt a reinstallation 'over top' of the existing one.
Have you tried to start the install over again?
Might be worth trying another 'clean' install on an empty drive.

I tried two reinstalls without success. I read some more of the previous posts and decided to try one of the suggestions. I booted and ran "scandisk C: /surface". I'm now loading the rest of my utilites and programs, I guess it worked. Not sure what the cure was but I'm up and running.
While I'm on here, is there a way to find, or obtain, previous user names and passwords that I have used on this forum? I had two others and I was not sure of the names or passwords after clean installs.
Thank you.

Glad it's working out then - disk errors seem to be the root cause of this in a few instances anyways.
If you recall the correct username & pwd you should be able to log back in under that identity - enabling cookies lets the info remain on your machine. As far as retrieving a 'lost' login - I'm doubtful. You'd need to contact Justin, and I'm not sure he could (or would even want to) be able to do that.
Them's the breaks ; )

To avoid this problem in future, copy vmm32.vxd onto a floppy. Everyone should do this I reckon.
Note that it is made during install and you must not take the copy off your Windows CD (it's only a shell).

The solution on an install is to head to the BIOS and ensure that the CD is NOT before the harddrive. If it is, change it so that C is before.

Any chance of expanding on the why's and wherefore's of your suggestion, or perhaps you can supply a link to a website that already does this?
Many thanks
Derek

I have been suggesting this as a fix for a while now, and anyone who responds back indicates that it works.
It is only when the missing file occurs during an install. It would appear that on the windows boot, it is looking for the file on the primary boot unit and when the CD is first, it can't find the file (since it is on disk),and once you switch to have the C: drive before the CD drive, all is well.

Ah yes WhitPhil, I'm with you. Hadn't appreciated that you meant just "during install" (seen too many postings about vmm32.vxd errors just suddenly raising their heads).
Thanks for the extra info, much appreciated.
Derek

HALALOOYAH
Thank You WhitPhil
After months of searching and sleepless nights of trying to find out why this error occured on only one of my friends computers we have finally fixed it with such a simple solution....Many other suggested solutions...including microsoft itself tell you to replace and extract vmm32.vxd. I now know that when a computer boots from the cd-rom before the hard drive it is just reading a shell of the vmm32.vxd and needs to read the one it created on istallation and has stored in the system folder of windows.
Try this site for an explenation of the vxd files and what happens during setup....Just don't follow the instructions cos they are very confusing and complicated http://www.easydesksoftware.com/news/news10.htm
